Integrated Waste Exchange (IWEX)

Integrated Waste Exchange (IWEX)

After spearheading Cape Town’s waste exchange journey since 2008/9, our IWEX online platform has been retired and is no longer available. However, we do fund the Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis (WISP) waste exchange programme.

About

IWEX was the City’s free online waste exchange platform that enabled waste generators and users to exchange unwanted by-products or waste materials.

It unlocked new markets for unwanted materials, helped to facilitate the re-use of waste, and helped to conserve energy, minimise resource use and reduce the pressure on Cape Town's landfill space. The service was available to anyone who generated or used waste, including companies, individuals, institutions, schools, NGOs, and community groups.

Exchange waste with WISP

IWEX has been retired, however, we remain committed to waste exchange by funding the Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP). This is a free service that connects companies with unused resources, waste materials and expertise. Businesses are encouraged to join the WISP network to realise the return on investment it offers.

Watch an overview of WISP and visit GreenCape for more information.
