We’ve highlighted this time and again, as well as the common denominator which in many instance is alcohol. This weekend, as I did my rounds, joint operations were taking place in many of our suburbs involving City agencies, SAPS and our neighbourhood watches. We can’t do any of this without our emergency services, and that first line of contact, which is our emergency call takers. And, while we all remain committed to public safety, it is actually very sad to see the amount of resources we have to devote to reduce the harm associated with poor choices,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

On the roads, traffic officers arrested 72 suspects, including 56 for drunk driving (up from the previous week’s 16), three for reckless and negligent driving and 13 for other types of transgressions. They also recorded 55 736 offences, impounded 308 public transport vehicles and executed 995 warrants of arrest.

Law Enforcement officers arrested 214 suspects and issued 6 458 notices for various transgressions during the past week.

The Metro Police Department made 80 arrests, including 26 for drunk driving and 39 for the illegal possession of drugs. They also recovered various quantities of drugs, two firearms and an imitation firearm.

Residents are reminded to report any emergency by phoning the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or dial 107 from a landline.

End

| 2025-03-02T22:00:00Z | GP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891d | | | | | GP0|#633591e2-ed41-4816-9750-3d5f5090deda;L0|#0633591e2-ed41-4816-9750-3d5f5090deda|illegal activity;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#4bcb251f-1166-4a1c-8ee5-d33721046dec;L0|#04bcb251f-1166-4a1c-8ee5-d33721046dec|law enforcement;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#600eaabc-72c0-46c2-844d-111c8ef159c7;L0|#0600eaabc-72c0-46c2-844d-111c8ef159c7|Emergency Call Centre;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb | 1 | | | | | | | | | | | 0 |
