City offers cash reward for information on vandalism of trains

The City is offering a R5000 reward for information that leads to the positive identification and arrest of those responsible for the stoning of a brand new train set (with repair costs estimated to be around R20 000). The incident took place around the Steenberg area on Tuesday, 4 January.

Damage to critical infrastructure is completely unacceptable, even if it is perpetrated by youth who think that stoning trains is “fun”.

For too long, a well-functioning rail service has been absent from our city and millions of Capetonians suffer as a result. Capetonians end up having to spend more of their income on other forms of public transport, and take longer to get to work and back home.

We cannot allow a few individuals who wish to damage and steal public infrastructure to rob us all of the resources we need to improve our lives.
When the trains run again, after long absences and very expensive investment, we should all help to protect them.

I’ve spoken to Metrorail and it confirms that a window on the brand new Southern Line train was broken due to stone throwing on its first day of operation last week. (Please note that a photo that is doing the rounds on social media, however, is from Gauteng and not Cape Town.)

A proud Capetonian does not destroy or steal infrastructure. A proud Capetonian helps build and protect.

*Anyone who has information on the incident can contact the Public Emergency Call Centre (107 from a landline and 021 480 7700 from a cell phone.

End

2022-01-10T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#762de267-90ad-4660-8493-5085a227187c;L0|#0762de267-90ad-4660-8493-5085a227187c|Transport;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GPP|#849c71d3-ed9d-4ce2-89f6-03e9c6f179ef;GPP|#ed82ebba-eb32-4b9a-99c9-da3e081869a6;GP0|#fc0a19bf-6a9b-42af-bc90-8a0d4b9f4eac;L0|#0fc0a19bf-6a9b-42af-bc90-8a0d4b9f4eac|vandalism;GP0|#2c635718-4b0b-4e58-87c0-bab3121855f4;L0|#02c635718-4b0b-4e58-87c0-bab3121855f4|Metrorail10
