City libraries up to code on the world stage |

Cape Town's libraries have developed a serious case of coding this year.

In July, 26 libraries participated in the #coding4Mandela tournament, which drew 16 000 learners from around 60 sites across the country.

This past weekend, Bonteheuwel library was invited to showcase unplugged coding at the 'Coolest Projects South Africa 2023' event at the Cape Town Science Centre in Observatory.

Projects were submitted by children in various coding languages, and involved delegates from 17 African and 27 European countries.

The event came just weeks ahead of the World Coding Championship, in which three other City libraries will participate.

Teams from Belhar, Ocean View and Valhalla Park libraries shone at the national coding event in July, and will, on 5 December, participate in the virtual #Coding4Mandela World Championships, which is also the 10th anniversary of the late Nelson Mandela's passing.

The library teams will be part of a South African contingent going up against teams from Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Germany and the United States.

The award-winning tangible coding movement is an engagement project of the Nelson Mandela University Computing Sciences Department and the Leva Foundation.

Tangible Africa is responsible for creating coding applications, TANKS and RANGERS, which allow participants to play offline, using minimal resources.

'I am incredibly proud of our three library teams who will not only represent their communities, but also the country. Coding provides our learners with opportunities to hone their analytical skills, and improve their comprehension and problem-solving abilities. To have made it to the world championship is a feat and I know our teams will give it their all,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.

Unplugged coding allows libraries to bring coding to communities who do not have access to expensive resources.

By downloading a very small app (7MB), participants can play TANKS or RANGERS offline, using the app and the tokens from the game packs.

To find out more about coding in your region, contact
