Dick Dent Bird Sanctuary
The Dick Dent Bird Sanctuary boasts a bird hide that’s a boon for ornithologists and wildlife photographers. The sanctuary was once a wastewater treatment works near the estuary of the Lourens River. Today the 10-hectare (25-acre) site has become a natural wetland that is home to many coastal and wading birds. It enjoys conservation status as part of the Lourens River Protected Natural Environments.

The sanctuary falls under the management of Helderberg Nature Reserve. Birding enthusiasts belonging to The Somerset West Bird Club maintain the sanctuary with the help of a conservator who also manages the Lourens River and Harmony Flats Reserves for the City of Cape Town.

Although there is huge potential for further development of this reserve, it is prone to vandalism because it is isolated. For this reason, it is recommended that visitors travel in groups to the spot.
GP0|#754dde40-8789-4494-9113-50ac9121fd42;L0|#0754dde40-8789-4494-9113-50ac9121fd42|Nature appreciation;GTSet|#153637b8-411d-4bf7-8214-7237f5d775f0
General enquiries

Telephone:
021 444 9744

Fax:
021 444 9750

E-mail:
helderbergnature.reserve@capetown.gov.za

10 hectares
GP0|#85579bd7-789d-4832-9900-fe1efea137bf;L0|#085579bd7-789d-4832-9900-fe1efea137bf|Bird hide;GTSet|#4be4596d-cdfe-41f7-a569-9d9c4e16c716;GP0|#36fb11f6-3340-4633-8a08-816df4d3bfb3;L0|#036fb11f6-3340-4633-8a08-816df4d3bfb3|Water features

Broadway Boulevard, Strand
