Mayor's Portfolio of Urban Sustainability programme
Background and objectives

The Mayor's Portfolio began in 2013, inspired by the 2014 World Design Capital. Stakeholders in the Environmental Management Department sought to understand how the City was implementing design solutions through tangible, creative projects that deliver real results to the people of Cape Town.

Since then, we have published a number of editions, including a joint edition with the City of Aachen in 2021.

Access the documents

Mayor's Portfolio of Urban Sustainability 2023

Cape Town-Aachen Mayor's Portfolio of Urban Sustainability 2021

Mayor's Portfolio of Urban Sustainability 2020

Mayor's Portfolio of Urban Sustainability 2018

Mayor's Portfolio of Urban Sustainability 2016

Mayor's Portfolio of Urban Sustainability 2014

The Mayor’s Portfolio showcases innovative projects that address socio-economic and environmental challenges, fostering a more sustainable and resilient city for current and future generations. The panel plays an important part in reviewing the processes and moderating the assessment of the projects included.

Evaluation process

Projects featured in the Mayor’s Portfolio need to:

Be in the implementation phase or recently completed.

Address socioeconomic and environmental issues in an integrated manner and within a framework of good governance.

Be making a positive change in their sector, while crossing sector boundaries and working transversally.

Be innovative or original in their approach.

Demonstrate collaboration and partnership building.

Definitively contribute to the implementation of high-level City strategies, notably, the City’s Environmental Strategy.

Empower the communities in which they operate or the greater Cape Town community, for example with skills, employment, connections and networks, or knowledge transfer.

Encourage replication through ease of process, creative or cost effective use of material, and strategies that position the project as a true example of practical ways to achieve sustainability.

Selected projects undergo a rigorous evaluation process. Each project is evaluated on 12 sustainability criteria, identifying best practices and areas for improvement, driving continuous progress towards sustainability.

While projects differ in scale, resources, timelines, aims and objectives, they all offer lessons to be learnt.

Contact us

If you have any questions or need more information about the Mayor’s Portfolio of Urban Sustainability publication, kindly contact the following representatives:

Muofhe Pedzai - PO: Environmental Strategy Implementation

Email:
Muofhe.Pedzai@capetown.gov.za

Saul Roux – Head: Environmental Strategy Implementation

Email:
SaulAlexander.Roux@capetown.gov.za

GP0|#8aa36e7d-9f6c-4b90-813d-35f88ac21968;L0|#08aa36e7d-9f6c-4b90-813d-35f88ac21968|Mayor's Portfolio of Urban Sustainability;GTSet|#ef3a64a2-d764-44bc-9d69-3a63d3fadea1;GPP|#8ff24115-2747-4ed6-9b36-f1423b85d836;GPP|#117084d9-e07b-4e3c-a6aa-d2badf907d64;GPP|#245ec7aa-a528-4cd3-bcac-597c292db711;GP0|#d215006e-f109-43f1-8604-7092589707b7;L0|#0d215006e-f109-43f1-8604-7092589707b7|Mayor's Portfolio of Urban Sustainability;GPP|#fed763f7-a5b7-4562-89bd-f6361e372698;GPP|#8e28a3fa-1ff1-4fbd-ada3-4befc9119617;GPP|#af370586-9ba3-404a-9d6e-02066ca42752;GP0|#c9e19722-4c5d-40b2-81e1-b4a7bebcb74c;L0|#0c9e19722-4c5d-40b2-81e1-b4a7bebcb74c|Mayor's Portfolio of Urban Sustainability;GPP|#ff1602e7-2312-4a5c-8fe4-1059d0eefaeb;GPP|#d01efebf-2396-4714-ace2-b0ada5ba6962;GPP|#e88ff549-973f-4e3c-a46c-cfbe61bd6a24The Mayor's Portfolio of Urban Sustainabilityis a key initiative aimed at embedding sustainability principles into the design, implementation and management of City .0
