The City, in partnership with various conservation organisations, can confirm that currently, conserved land in Cape Town covers 55 703 ha, which is 22,72% of the municipal area. The City manages a total of 20 045 hectares in its 22 nature reserves and 16 Biodiversity Agreement Conservation Areas in this conservation estate, the majority of which are open to the public.

The City of Cape Town now invites residents to provide input on the updated policy which will continue to guide sustainable forward planning in this ever growing city.

Cape Town’s conservation estate comprises Table Mountain National Park, nature reserves and conservation areas, as well as some private biodiversity stewardship sites.

‘This Biodiversity Spatial Plan is for the entire city and has been updated over the years to include the revised red list of threatened ecosystems within Cape Town; it has been adapted to the sobering climate change realities we face; and strategic water source areas and groundwater protection zones were added to this critical plan to promote water security. The draft policy currently incorporates the latest best practice national principles and methods for spatial biodiversity planning,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

There are a range of sectors whose policies and decisions affect Cape Town’s biodiversity. The City therefore urges the public to take note of the updated Biodiversity Spatial Plan and provide their valuable input as it will inform and guide spatial planning, environmental assessments and natural resource management across the city.

‘Our intention is to reduce conflict between the environmental and other sectors with the provision of up-to-date information on biodiversity priorities that will guide forward planning; protected area expansion and sustainable development in Cape Town, the most biodiverse city in the world,’ said Alderman Andrews.

The Cape Town BioNet map illustrates the biodiversity network and selects terrestrial and aquatic features that are critical for conserving native biodiversity and maintaining ecosystem function at the landscape level.

‘Legislation, scientific data, best practice, and expert input form the foundation of the BioNet map as it illustrates the least land-hungry option possible to meet national biodiversity targets and the best option to keep Cape Town sustainable’, said Alderman Andrews.

The Cape Town BioNet consists of the following various categories which depict the condition of the biodiversity areas and are highlighted on the map:

• Protected Area
• Conservation Area
• Critical Biodiversity Area 1a (irreplaceable high and medium condition)
• Critical Biodiversity Area 1b (irreplaceable low condition, connectivity)
• Critical Biodiversity Area 1c (irreplaceable low condition)
• Critical Biodiversity Area 2 (optimal)
• Ecological Support Area 1 (natural or semi-natural ecological condition)
• Ecological Support Area 2 (intensively modified ecological condition)
• Other Natural Area (not required to meet biodiversity targets)
Residents can access this critical information at City libraries and via the City’s website.

Comments can be submitted as follows, before 13 March 2025:
• Submit your comments online at: Comment on the draft Cape Town Biodiversity Spatial Plan, 2025
• Email to public.participation@capetown.gov.za
• Call 0800 212 176 for the Public Participation Unit to assist if you are unable to read or write

End

2025-02-12T22:00:00Z1
City going paperless: Sign up for emailed City accounts before 31 December 2025 City going paperless: Sign up for emailed City accounts before 31 December 2025 The City has been driving a paperless billing campaign for many years and more than 430 000 accounts are currently being sent via email.
‘We’ve made a lot of progress over the years with reducing the number of bills we print and send via the postal service, however we are stepping up our efforts to switch to emailed accounts. We’ve made it very easy to switch. Business and residential account holders are asked to merely send an email or SMS with their account number and email address to request an emailed account and to do so before 31 December 2025. After this date, the City will be going paperless. Importantly, all account holders with no email access will be assisted and they are advised to call the City’s Call Centre so that we know about them and can help them.

‘It is very important to reduce the risk with the South African postal service and bills not being delivered. Emailed accounts also make it easy for account holders to keep track of their bills, and use the accounts for proof of residence. Saving on printing and postage also contributes to a more financially and environmentally sustainable organisation,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Finance, Councillor Siseko Mbandezi.

Aerial view of Cape Town - Loren ipsum dolor sit amet loren ipsum dolor sit amet Loren ipsum dolor sit amet.

1 of 3

2025-02-12T22:00:00Z1

Skateboarding workshop pops and grindsSkateboarding workshop pops and grindsThe Recreation and Parks Department, in collaboration with Indigo Youth Movement and Outlangish, successfully hosted a skateboarding workshop.
This past weekend’s workshop was held at the City Bowl Park and participants were selected from those who attended the initial session and demonstrated basic skating skills.

It proved the demand for structured skateboarding sessions in the area, paving the way for a potential formalised programme that will continue to empower and engage young people through sport.

With professional skaters on hand to guide them, participants stepped on skateboards to flip, grind and pop.

The Indigo Youth Movement and Outlangish teams, who initiated the concept, provided free lessons, skateboards and an electrifying atmosphere.

The Langa Pump Track has become a vital recreational space for young people in the area and surrounds. While it is not a dedicated skateboarding facility, it provides an accessible and inclusive space for wheeled sports, including skateboarding.

Many of the participants in this initiative were already attending programmes at the facility, making it a natural starting point for the engagement.

Recreation and Parks has been actively building relationships with external partners over the past five years, particularly focusing on youth development. This collaboration is the latest example of how the City continues to strengthen these partnerships.

The initiative was organised through a collaborative effort, with the Recreation and Parks team not only recruiting local youth, but also providing them with development opportunities through structured training, mentorship and skill-building activities as part of the programme going forward.

Starting at the Langa Pump Track allowed the organisers to gauge interest and assess skill levels before moving to Phase 2 at City Bowl Park - a facility built to Olympic specifications for skateboarding training. This gave the young participants the opportunity to experience a professional-grade skateboarding environment, while still having the Langa Pump Track as a space they can regularly utilise closer to home.

Adding to the significance of this initiative, Dallas Oberholzer, a South African Olympic skateboarder, played a key role in guiding the youth and sharing his expertise, further enriching their experience in the sport.

‘The City is committed to creating meaningful opportunities for young people to develop confidence, learn new skills and build a sense of community. It’s inspiring to see how sport and recreation programmes can bring people together and open doors for the future,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.

This initiative has been made possible through funding from Ward 51, with the ward councillor actively involved. The funding covered transportation and refreshments for participants.

‘Providing recreational opportunities for our youth is a key priority. This initiative not only promotes an active lifestyle but also offers young people a chance to develop confidence, discipline and new skills. I look forward to seeing this programme grow and having even more young skaters from Langa involved,’ said Ward Councillor Lwazi Pakade.

Caption 1: Sibabalwe Mbe (10) from Langa alongside South African skateboarder Dallas Oberholzer.

Caption 2: Iman Mpange (14) and facilitator Philangezwi Gwala.

END

2025-02-12T22:00:00Z1

Prevent blocked sewersPrevent blocked sewersThe City has an excessively high number of sewer blockages each year. On average, we attend to nearly 300 sewer blockages every day. Clearing these blockages makes our operational costs higher.GP0|#0549bc50-a20a-4870-897a-a249a9f2ce90;L0|#00549bc50-a20a-4870-897a-a249a9f2ce90|City-Connect;GTSet|#ef3a64a2-d764-44bc-9d69-3a63d3fadea1;GP0|#c529c1ac-1f8d-48ae-8079-d34f4dae9c57;L0|#0c529c1ac-1f8d-48ae-8079-d34f4dae9c57|Explore and enjoy;GP0|#245ec7aa-a528-4cd3-bcac-597c292db711;L0|#0245ec7aa-a528-4cd3-bcac-597c292db711|Family and home;GP0|#af370586-9ba3-404a-9d6e-02066ca42752;L0|#0af370586-9ba3-404a-9d6e-02066ca42752|Local and communities;GP0|#e88ff549-973f-4e3c-a46c-cfbe61bd6a24;L0|#0e88ff549-973f-4e3c-a46c-cfbe61bd6a24|Work and business1prevent-blocked-sewersNormal
