Athlone Refuse Transfer Station (ARTS) | Athlone Refuse Transfer Station (ARTS) |
Where distances to landfills for internal and external refuse collection service providers are too far to travel, they may make use of a transfer station to offload waste. The waste is then compacted into containers and transferred via rail or road to a landfill site.

At the ARTS facility a selection of the general “dirty” waste stream is diverted to the materials recycling facility (MRF) for removal of recyclable material. The process is known as a “dirty” MRF due to the separation of recyclables from the general waste stream. The remaining waste is compacted into sealed containers and taken to Vissershok Landfill on a daily basis, by rail. At ARTS, 50 containers of compacted waste are transported every night after 19:00 to the Vissershok Landfill site. There is also a drop-off facility for recyclables.
