We are committed to mixed-use and residentially-led developments that boost community and social investment, improve diversity and integration, drive upgrading of facilities and services and give development opportunity through sound public private sector initiatives. Dignity through housing is a must.
We currently have a pipeline of more than 12 000 affordable housing opportunities on well-located land in urban centres across the metro where people want to live, work and be part of their communities.
Affordable housing is not low-cost housing. It follows a different model and looks very different. It involves income thresholds in general
between R1 850 and R32 000.
How to apply
Before you can apply for social housing, you are required to
register on the City's housing needs register.
If your joint monthly income and needs meet certain criteria, you could qualify to rent social housing from City partners. Social housing apartments are built on City-owned land in partnership with social housing institutions (SHIs), with National Government supplying the funding from their Social Housing Subsidy.
Unfortunately, national funding has drastically dried up. The City is therefore looking at enhanced ways to provide affordable housing in collaboration with the private sector.

To qualify for a social and affordable housing opportunity, you must:
- be 21 years or older;
- have a clean credit record (affordability);
- be a South African citizen or permanent resident;
- be married or single, with or without dependents;
- be competent to contract; and
- be able to pay the required monthly rental.
