Apply for a driving instructor’s certificate
Requirements
- If you want to instruct for more than one code, you have to apply and pay for each code separately.
- You can only apply at a driving licence testing centre graded with the code you are applying for.
- You can only instruct for the code you applied for.
- You must pass a written learners test and a practical drivers test.
- You must produce a medical certificate completed by a medical practitioner.
- You must undergo a criminal record check and provide a criminal clearance certificate.
Apply
Step 1: Download and complete the Instructor Registration Application Form (R1) from the document download section below.
The application must be accompanied by:
- a copy of your driving licence;
- a copy of your identity document;
- the application fee of R165; and
- two identical black and white ID photographs;
Step 2: Submit the completed application form together with all supporting documents at your nearest
driving licence testing centre.
If all of the above is in order, you'll be required to:
Step 3: Your completed forms will be sent to the
Mobility Department
for authorisation. Once we receive notice of their approval, you will be contacted to come in and book an appointment (free of charge) for the tests (practical and theory).
If you pass both tests, you'll receive your certificate after paying the required fee. The instructor’s certificate is valid for 12 months and must be renewed annually.
What to bring when you collect your certificate:
- Acceptable Identification (ID document)
- R33.00 for the issuing of the certificate
