Submit a naming/renaming proposal
Cape Town has a long history of human settlement and a rich, diverse heritage. The names of our streets, places, and public spaces should reflect this diversity in a way that is recognisable, inclusive, and meaningful to all.
Requirements
Proposals to name or rename an existing building, park, street, or other public facility may be submitted by members of the public, community organisations, or by the City Council.
All proposals are considered in line with the City’s
Naming Policy.
You will need to complete and submit the Naming Policy Application Form before your request can be considered.
To submit a proposal, you must:
- Complete Annexure A: Naming Application Form.
- Provide supporting research: When completing Part 3 of the application form, include relevant research or evidence to support the proposed name. This is particularly important where the proposal seeks to honour an individual.
- Attach proof of community support: Submit evidence of community consultation or support, as outlined in Section 7.3 of the Naming Policy, for example:
Petitions or referendums (Optional:

Minutes/recordings of community/organisation meetings (with attendance registers)
Community surveys, letters, or emails of support
- Complete Annexure B: Letter of Consent (Only if the proposal involves a person)

Please note
We will assess your request according to an
internal approval process, which involves the City Council. All incomplete applications will be returned.
