Signage for property marketing agents and auctioneers
If you sell, market, let, lease or auction properties in Cape Town, you will need to have a permit for any directional boards you place on City-owned land. This includes a
signage application for property marketing agents and auctioneers, as well as signage for private sellers.
The permit will include six permit stickers. Each sticker, which is uniquely numbered, must be displayed on any directional board for the duration of the year. This means you will only be able to put out a maximum of six boards at a time. If you are a private seller, you will only be issued with three stickers.

Signage for developers
If you are a developer, you are only permitted to put up one development board on the property you are developing, as follows:
- For a residential development, the maximum size permitted is 3 m² .
- For a mixed-use development (commercial and residential), only one board may be erected not exceeding 5 m².
- No directional boards are permitted.
Signage for private sellers
If you are selling your house privately and want to put up directional signage, such as a ‘for sale’ board, you will need to visit your local district office (see below) and pay for a permit. You will be issued with three stickers. Each sticker must be displayed on any of the boards used to advertise your property until your property has been sold.
The permit is only valid for a three-month period. If the property is not sold within three months, you will need to apply for a new permit. If the permit stickers become damaged, they can be replaced for free as long as you bring the original stickers with you. The permit stickers are not transferable.
