| Water consumption climbs worryingly | <p>After an initially encouraging response to the implementation of Level 3 water restrictions, total consumption once again accelerated last week, with an average of 905 million litres per day being used. This is well over the target of 800 million litres, and is up 50 million litres per day since the previous week.</p><p>Residents are reminded that the tariffs associated with Level 3 restrictions came into effect on 1 December 2016, and as such there is now likely to be a financial consequence if savings are not achieved, especially for high water users (see table below).</p>

<p>‘We suspect that with the warmer weather, many residents are relaxing their adherence to some of the restrictions surrounding watering and filling of pools. Residents who continue to use water inefficiently for these purposes are placing the water supply for everyone under pressure.</p><p>‘To those who have enthusiastically embraced the restrictions, and who are going above and beyond in order to save as much water as possible, thanks is due. Without your efforts it is likely that we would be in an even more tenuous position than we are now. There are, however, a number of residents who are undoing the good work. We are hopeful that through continued publicity and the newly-imposed tariffs, we will be able to address this, but we also encourage the civic-minded among us to please continue to report the members of their community who are contravening the restrictions,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Utility Services, Alderman Ernest Sonnenberg.</p><p>Residents should also look out for an insert in their next rates bill that details the restrictions and why they are necessary.
