Walking Bus Programme<span> <h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​​​About the programme​​​​​​​</h2></span> <p>We have teamed up with community members in areas that are affected by crime and gang violence, to help children in their areas travel to and from school safely.</p><p>The Walking Bus Programme offers safe passage for school children and peace of mind for parents. Volunteers walk with groups of learners to and from school, and where possible, also keep an eye on school perimeters </p><p>The City monitors and supports the programme in a number of ways, including among others:</p><ul><li>Assisting with volunteer vetting process</li><li>Basic counselling to identify and intervene with at risk children and youth</li><li>Basic security training</li><li>First-aid training</li><li>Training in relevant legislation that impacts on children and their families</li><li>Training on community issues, such as gender-based violence, substance abuse, etc.</li></ul><p>The programme is active in more than 90 areas, including:</p><ul><li>Beacon Valley</li><li>Bishop Lavis</li><li>Blue Downs</li><li>Bonteheuwel</li><li>Eerste River</li><li>Elsies River</li><li>Hanover Park</li><li>Lentegeur</li><li>Leonsdale</li><li>Manenberg</li><li>Ocean View</li><li>Scottsdene</li></ul><p>The Walking Bus Programme is also supported by schools, <a href="http://www.capetown.gov.za/Departments/Metropolitan%20Police%20Services%20Department">Metropolitan Police Services Department</a>, the <a href="http://www.capetown.gov.za/Departments/Law%20Enforcement%2c%20Traffic%20and%20Coordination%20Department">Law Enforcement, Traffic and Coordination Department</a>, <a href="https://www.saps.gov.za/" target="_blank">South African Police Service (SAPS)<i class="icon link-external"></i></a>, <a href="http://www.capetown.gov.za/Family%20and%20home/Safety-in-the-home/Community-policing/Community-police-forum">Community Policing Forums</a> and local <a href="http://www.capetown.gov.za/Family%20and%20home/Safety-in-the-home/Community-policing/Neighbourhood-watch">Neighbourhood Watch</a> groups.</p> <span> <h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​​​Join a Walking Bus group​​​​​​​</h2></span> <p>If you would like to volunteer, you will need to request to join your local Walking Bus group. You will be required to undergo a vetting process that includes receiving SAPS clearance via our Law Enforcement, Traffic and Coordination Department.</p><p>Only once you have received SAPS police clearance will you be accepted as a volunteer on the Walking Bus Programme. All volunteers are registered with the <a href="https://www.westerncape.gov.za/dept/community-safety" target="_blank">Western Cape Department of Community Safety<i class="icon link-external"></i></a>. Volunteers are paid an <a href="http://www.capetown.gov.za/work%20and%20business/jobs-and-skills-development/youth-careers/find-an-opportunity-with-epwp">Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP)</a> stipend.</p> <span> <h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​​​Create a Walking Bus group​​​​​​​</h2></span> <p>If you are interested in creating your own Walking Bus group, you will need to contact the school.
