Seasonal hopefuls feel the heat
Every year, the Fire and Rescue Service recruits 120 seasonal firefighters on a contract basis to assist with the increase in wild fires during the warmer months.

The competition is fierce, with an average of 1 500 hopefuls turning up for the physical assessment each year.

Fire and Rescue Service recruits 120 seasonal firefighters

Fire and Rescue Service recruits 120 seasonal firefighters

Fire and Rescue Service recruits 120 seasonal firefighters

Aerial view of Cape Town - Loren ipsum dolor sit amet loren ipsum dolor sit amet Loren ipsum dolor sit amet.

1 of 3

Applicants are required to complete the following:

• 1,9 metre reach test
• 2,4 kilometre run in 11 minutes (males) or 12 minutes (females)
• 30 push-ups in 60 seconds
• 30 sit-ups in 60 seconds
• Carry 2 x 25 kilograms of dead load over a distance of 100 metres

‘This is the standard physical assessment for anyone applying for an operational position within the City’s Safety and Security Directorate and it is no walk in the park. Testament to this is the fact that only a few hundred applicants will be left standing by the time the physical trials conclude. Fighting wildfires is a physically demanding task and often requires many hours on the frontline, so this physical assessment is a key element in the recruitment process,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith.

Once the physical assessments are completed, the candidates who have passed move on to a written test and an interview before final selection and training.

The training comprises a four-week-long wildland firefighting course where recruits are taught the basics of combating vegetation fires, the different types of equipment used for this task, as well as the specific roles and functions of each staff member when responding to a vegetation fire.

The seasonal firefighters will go on duty from 1 December 2018 until the end of April 2019.

‘The Western Cape is prone to wildfires over the summer period. Our seasonal firefighters are crucial to protecting the urban edge when those fires happen. Over the years, our Fire and Rescue Service has developed this programme into a well-oiled machine that has delivered some top-class performers. Best of luck to the applicants this year, and for those who do not make it this time around, don’t give up and give it a try again next year,’ added Alderman Smith.

End

2018-07-24T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#be636f11-7b98-43b9-b645-2da94d664d42;L0|#0be636f11-7b98-43b9-b645-2da94d664d42|fire season;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#cd2cd131-61eb-42aa-a4bd-73e6caa5148f;L0|#0cd2cd131-61eb-42aa-a4bd-73e6caa5148f|fire and rescue;GP0|#3bdea1a3-b12c-4b06-9730-f22effed649b;L0|#03bdea1a3-b12c-4b06-9730-f22effed649b|Recruitment1
