Mayor Dan Plato encourages youth to help fight COVID-19 and build a brighter future
Mayor Dan Plato marks June 16, Youth Day, with a message of hope to the country’s youth.

The 1976 Soweto Uprising was a clear example of the youth making their voices heard against an oppressive system.

Today we must be more committed in our hope for a better future and all its possibilities. Young people have long been the driving force against injustice, oppression and the fight for equality and opportunity. With that same determination, we need your commitment in helping us beat COVID-19 and in our efforts to rebuild a brighter future.

We face many challenges, but we are resilient. Now more than ever, that spirit of hope and positivity is needed to build a society founded on openness, equality and opportunity.

With much misinformation in the public domain, my hope is that you continue to think independently; to form your own opinions. We have seen many young leaders charting a positive way forward for change by understanding the power of truth and transparency.

This past week, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It reminded me of how much can be achieved through working together and uniting towards a common goal. For those incredible weeks of the tournament, we saw people across all groups embrace each other in an accepting and joyful spirit of togetherness.

Let us recapture that spirit of unity and hope as we move forward together as #OneCityTogether.

End

2020-06-15T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891d;GP0|#904f8ac3-ad18-4896-a9a8-86feb1d4a1b7;L0|#0904f8ac3-ad18-4896-a9a8-86feb1d4a1b7|StatementsGP0|#98dd7640-1d3e-435b-a4a2-8bef6ebf3f12;L0|#098dd7640-1d3e-435b-a4a2-8bef6ebf3f12|youth day;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#90b49a62-96e2-436a-9c68-187c9ab33534;L0|#090b49a62-96e2-436a-9c68-187c9ab33534|Mayor1
