Increasing number of residents opting for paperless invoicing
Of the 972 200 invoices that the City of Cape Town issues every month, some 23% or 223 794 invoices are sent out via email. All customers with cell numbers also receive an SMS for the amount billed and due after every month’s billing period.

The City’s drive to go paperless reduces costs, improves efficiency for its customers and decreases reliance on the South African Post Office, especially when strikes occur.

The emailing of invoices has grown by 12% from 198 559 in June 2017 to 223 794 in June 2018.

‘The City is encouraged to see this growth and we know that the majority of our account holders are conscientious people who are committed to the environment and, at the same time, expect an efficient, technologically advanced and cost-effective administration. The City is certain that the numbers will grow over the coming years. The City has gotten the basics right: our large billing system has a 99% accuracy rate and going paperless is the next step to enhancing the system for all,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Finance, Councillor Johan van der Merwe.

A few benefits of going paperless include:

improved customer relations

savings on postage, printing and paper of approximately R 2,1 million per annum

invoices reach customers faster

reduced impact on the environment

easy filing of invoices by customers

better cash flow for the City

The turnaround time for the payments of accounts has also improved.

Customers can go paperless by registering for e-services and e-billing online.
