City to honour the older generation at event in celebration of International Day for Older Persons
International Day for Older Persons is celebrated annually on 1 October 2018. This year the City of Cape Town’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department will host 200 senior citizens from across the city at a two-day event to be held in Retreat on 2 and 3 October 2018. Also in attendance will be the Cape Peninsula Organisation for the Aged (CPOA), the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), the Department of Home Affairs and the South African Police Service (SAPS)

‘Many times we forget that older people come with a wealth of experiences and skills. They have oftentimes lived through situations that others would find unimaginable. It is for this reason that we need to care and support our elders and use these lifetimes of experience to enrich our lives,’ said the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith.

An array of entertainment has been planned to entertain the invited guests. SASSA and the Department of Home Affairs will be on call to inform and assist seniors on old-age pensions. The SAPS will inform them on the rights of seniors and how to deal with challenges such as elderly abuse.

‘The abuse of elderly people may be of a physical or psychological nature that involves emotional or verbal aggression, or it may even involve financial or other material maltreatment. Irrespective of the type of abuse, it results in unnecessary suffering, pain and injury and is a violation of human rights for the older person. As a society, we need to ensure that the elderly are informed of their rights and that they are able to deal with the situation should they find themselves in such a predicament. Ultimately, we need to stop this cycle of abuse,’ said the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith.

End

2018-09-29T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#9f73b8fd-2d1b-42fc-8779-9cc8a120d221;L0|#09f73b8fd-2d1b-42fc-8779-9cc8a120d221|Older Persons;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#7909552d-7094-4a9e-9841-a8188cf93029;L0|#07909552d-7094-4a9e-9841-a8188cf93029|Celebration1
