City responds to claims around shooting of SAPS member
The City of Cape Town has taken note of the statements made by Minister Bheki Cele in regard to the incident on 7 January 2020 which resulted in the death of Constable Thando Sigcu.

The City wishes to point out that, at the outset, it undertook to cooperate with the Hawks in regard to the investigation of the matter and that the City will continue to do so.

The City’s representatives as well as the attorneys acting for the law enforcement officer implicated in the shooting incident have been in constant contact with the Hawks investigating team in regard to the criminal investigation.

Information has been provided to the Hawks by the City and further information & evidential material will be made available by the COCT to the Hawks for the purposes of the investigation of the matter.

The City indicated to the SAPS on the night in question that we have no CCTV footage of the actual incident – only what transpired after. We have had no formal request from the Investigating Officer to view the footage, but will supply it for the sake of full transparency.

The statements made by Minister Cele about the City is, accordingly, irresponsible and is not factually correct. It is regrettable that the statements were made at the memorial service of the officer who died, particularly considering the sensitivity of this tragic incident.

The City can confirm that there has been ongoing discussions between the Hawks investigator and the implicated law enforcement officer’s attorneys regarding the provision of a statement to the Hawks.

The City emphasises that it will not risk compromising the investigation by acting irresponsibly, and reiterates that it will continue and support the Hawks and any other law enforcement body in the investigation of this matter.

End
2020-01-16T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#b480eb1b-cfa8-45cf-ab3d-21f848f482e9;L0|#0b480eb1b-cfa8-45cf-ab3d-21f848f482e9|safety and security;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb1
