Nelson Mandela in Cape Town - Legacy Exhibition
About

Please note

The Nelson Mandela legacy exhibition is closed until further notice, but you can still visit the Attic Exhibition, or experience a self-guided walk of the surrounding precinct.

We have created a permanent exhibition detailing the late President Nelson Mandela’s legacy, those involved in the liberation struggle in Cape Town, the events leading up to Mandela's release, and the transition into democracy. The museum-like exhibition features a timeline from Mandela’s early days and his resistance to apartheid, the time he spent with other struggle veterans on Robben Island, and culminates with his release on 11 February 1990 and subsequent speech delivered on balcony of City Hall.

The purpose of the exhibition is to create a popular cultural tourist attraction where you can visualise the events, and have a full experience of our country’s journey to democracy. The City Hall building is anticipated to be included in the National Liberation Heritage Route, and forms part of the city’s cultural heritage precinct, which includes the Castle of Good Hope, Old Granary, District Six Museum and Iziko Slave Lodge.

Visitor experience

You will be able to take part in self-guided and guided tours, walk in Madiba’s footsteps through the City Hall and stand on the balcony from where he addressed the nation. By using interpretive panels, audio-visual and interactive displays, we have put together an exhibition that brings to life Madiba’s life and legacy, as well as the people, organisations and events that contributed to freedom and democracy.

Statue

A bronze life-size statue of the late Nelson Mandela was unveiled on the balcony of City Hall on 24 July 2018. The statue is positioned on the balcony where he stood when he gave his first speech as a free man on 11 February 1990.

The sculpture was created by artists Xhanti Mpakama and Barry Jackson. Mpakama is a young artist who was born near Madiba's childhood home in the Eastern Cape, while Jackson is an experienced bronze sculptor who has crafted artworks of several historical figures for the National Heritage Project. Both artists also worked on the Mandela bust, which takes pride of place in front of the National Assembly at the South African Parliament.

The Western Cape Government (WCG) commissioned and donated the statue of Madiba to the City, as part of the exhibition to celebrate his life and legacy in Cape Town. It forms part of an initiative by the WCG and the City to share former President Mandela’s story with the world.

As part of the economic development strategy for the region, Project Khulisa, a Madiba legacy route was envisaged. The route allows you to follow in Nelson Mandela’s footsteps and visit key sites in the province. These include Robben Island, where he was imprisoned for most of his sentence, to Drakenstein prison and eventually to Parliament, where he was sworn in as our country’s first democratically-elected President in 1994.

Exhibition

The walk-through exhibition on the first floor of the City Hall consists of interpretive panels, audio-visual equipment, and interactive displays. The area has presided over public protests and jubilation. Set against Table Mountain, it forms a dramatic backdrop to the Grand Parade, the city’s main place of public gathering.
