Community police forums
What do CPFs do?

A partnership between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and local community, a Community Police Forum (CPF) is a way to get community and civic partners involved in fighting crime in neighbourhoods. Community policing brings the police and the community together to solve problems of crime. If we work together, we can make our community a safe place to live in.

The main focus and aims of CPFs are to:

improve communication and relations between the police and the community, encouraging them to work together as partners against crime;

identify and solve problems to do with fears of crime and disorder;

monitor the police, introducing ways to make the police service transparent and accountable; and

work together with other institutions in the local community, fostering an understanding between different cultural groups and promoting respect for human rights.

Who is in a CPF?

A CPF usually consists of schools, ratepayers associations, religious organisations, local businesses and civic groups. Station commissioners of local SAPS stations are responsible for establishing the forums, but a CPF is a community body. An executive committee is also elected. The local station commissioner has to sit on the committee, though not necessarily as its leader.

When a CPF is started, a constitution is decided upon which explains the aims of the forum and how it will operate. By law, community police forums must have aims which are laid out in their constitutions. All CPFs have to develop yearly community safety plans which form part of the local police station’s operational plan.

These safety plans focus on the priorities and the needs of the area, and are incredibly useful because they are written by the people who live there. This presents a unique opportunity for the entire community to have a say in how their area is policed and to actively invest in the safety of our city streets.

Get involved

If you are involved in an organisation in your community and would like to work with your local CPF, your best option is to contact your local police station.

Almost all police stations in the Western Cape have a community police forum and will be able to tell you more about their projects and aims, and put you in touch with the executive committee.

In the unlikely event that your local police station does not have a CPF, then you can contact the station commissioner who will need to organise the community together to kick off the forum.
GP0|#c5fba25d-00bc-408d-8c8a-177cd966d81d;L0|#0c5fba25d-00bc-408d-8c8a-177cd966d81d|Community police forum;GTSet|#ef3a64a2-d764-44bc-9d69-3a63d3fadea1;GPP|#4e24a9e3-0ea2-46ba-a192-615c4c57f93d;GPP|#df0a3405-0ca1-4617-8047-15a034219fee;GPP|#245ec7aa-a528-4cd3-bcac-597c292db711;GP0|#13c24056-19e9-4caf-9ef5-1aa3b0a3a769;L0|#013c24056-19e9-4caf-9ef5-1aa3b0a3a769|Community police forum;GPP|#5304393b-2d4f-4ade-9667-f7f72a15928f;GPP|#36dcb5fe-6bfc-4ae9-92d7-8bd08d1f6414;GPP|#af370586-9ba3-404a-9d6e-02066ca42752CPFs are an important partnership between communities and the SAPS to effectively combat crime in our areas.0
