Health and care for a loved one with a disability <span> <h2 class="sectHeading">Home care​​​​​</h2></span> <p>​​If you are able to care for your family member at home, it’s important for you to know how to make your home safe and how to stay aware of their needs – from social to health care. Stay up to date with City initiatives and support networks to help you. You can find more detail on some of these below.</p>​​​​<span> <div class="notification with-heading dark-copy pink bg-light-grey"><div class="graphic with-border"> <i class="info note"></i> </div><div class="desc"><h4>Please note</h4><p>Depending on your family me​mber’s needs, you may have to adapt your home or your routine to ensure their well-being and safety. </p></div></div></span> <p>It is important to consult a professional social worker or medical doctor to help you understand how to care for a person with disabilities at home. They can help you assess how capable your family member or friend is with basic everyday tasks.</p><p>To support people and families of people with disabilities living at home, we have introduced a specialised Expanded Public Works (EPWP) programme in Cape Town called <a href="https://www.westerncape.gov.za/project/expanded-public-works-programme-epwp" target="_blank">The Home Community Based Care Programme<i class="icon link-external"></i></a>. Clients that are identified are allocated a home-based caregiver who provides support and care for the person with a disability and their family.</p><p>We service eight districts in Cape Town and each has two full-time caregivers available to offer care services. If you need a referral for a family member with a disability and you would prefer to go to a local clinic, please see our clinics and <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/Family%20and%20home/See-all-City-facilities/Our-service-facilities/Clinics%20and%20healthcare%20facilities">healthcare facilities listing page</a> to find a clinic near you. You can also go straight to the Western Cape Government’s site and search in their <a href="https://www.westerncape.gov.za/directories/#facilities">health facilities database<i class="icon link-external"></i></a>.</p> <span> <h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​Healthcare for children with disabilities</h2></span> <p>If you have a child with a disability, the City provides training for caregivers as well as equipment which helps stimulate children’s physical and mental development through play.
