I encourage more people and companies to get involved and to see how we can help one another as part of the Cape Town community. Charity begins at home. Home involves everyone in the community. Our slogan in the Interchange Foundations is ‘Together We Become’ and this is a vital vision for how we can approach the roll out of housing in other communities,’ said Dr Wiid, who lives in the Helderberg area. </p><p>Dr Wiid raised the R340 000 for Ms Tshdna’s house through corporate sponsorship and construction started in February this year. COVID-19 delayed the process somewhat but the house was completed on 24 November 2020. It was handed over yesterday, 30 November 2020. </p><p>City human settlements officials assisted with the process in their spare time. </p> <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img class="responsive" src="http://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/91%20yr%20old_1.jpg" alt="" style="width:1076px;" /> </figure></span><span><p>‘I am really happy today and thankful for the effort and dedication from Ms Wiid and everyone who has been involved. Now I have a place to call my own and something to leave to my family one day,’ said Ms Tshdna. </p><p>‘It is so apt that on the last day of the public participation process on our Draft Human Settlements Strategy, we were able to join this very special handover and that Dr Wiid was there to see the fruits of her labour. Bless her and the important work that she is doing. Thank you to our officials who have donated their private time and expertise. </p><p>‘Our strategy says we are all connected and what happens on the one end affects the other end. We have a huge task ahead. The affordable housing need is greater than ever and informality is growing in Cape Town and in the rest of South Africa’s urban centres as the national economic situation declines. We need new and innovative partnerships and plans to create the communities that we want to have in Cape Town. We have so many residents and corporates that are wondering how they can make a difference, and helping with the delivery of housing and also with serviced sites will be one of the greatest contributions they can make to the lives of their employees. The sole reliance on government for the provision of brick and cement housing will simply not address the housing need. She worked as a lecturer and senior lecturer at colleges and universities her entire professional life. During this period, she served as Director of the Institute of Sport and Movement Studies (1986- 1990), Chairperson of the working group of National Curriculum for school Physical Education (1972- 1983) and Chairperson of the Physical Education section of the South African Association for Sport Science, Physical Education and Recreation (SAASSPER). She has been honoured for contributing to curriculum development and social development through multi-cultural projects.</p><p>She served as co-researcher for four research projects sponsored by the Human Sciences Research Council, including a seminal one titled: “A process approach to Solidarity: Acceptance of self, Other groups and the Community” (1993) applied at the community of Genadendal. Her community service record includes Co-Director of Educational Camps (1962-1984); Director of the Interchange Foundation (1988-2004); Co-ordinator and script writer for a 13-television series, “Together we Become” (1993); Chief Coordinator of the Youth Peace Festival, “Together we Become” (1994) with nationwide attendance of 850 children; Facilitator and Co-ordinator of Interchange Foundation Projects such as “Multicultural Educational Exchange” for youth and adults (1962-1994), “Homes not just Houses” (1992-ongoing) and “Creating Viable and Unified Communities”(1992- ongoing). </p><p> </p><p><strong>End</strong><br></p>

Missing lifeguard search draws to a close

The City expresses its heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, as well as his colleagues during this difficult time

<p>After three continuous days of an extensive search for a seasonal City Lifeguard who went missing in the surf during a rescue operation, the City can confirm that his body was found early yesterday evening, on the shore between Sonwabe and Sunrise Beach.</p><p>Emergency services arrived immediately on the scene and paramedics declared him deceased on site.</p><p>The City expresses its heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, as well as his colleagues during this difficult time. This is the first staff member that the Recreation and Parks Department has lost in the line of duty. His life will be honoured among the few exceptional men and women, who sacrificed their own lives to save others.</p><p>Thokozani Mthethwa was 23 years old. </p><p>He was a seasonal lifeguard working along Muizenberg Beach when he fell off a rescue sled being towed by a jet ski while on route to assist a kite surfer in distress off St James on Saturday, 28 November 2020.</p><p>We are deeply saddened by the outcomes of the extensive 3-day search undertaken by teams of internal staff and external partners, and would like to extend our gratitude to all parties who came together and spared no resources, tirelessly working together in order to find Thokozani since he went missing. </p><p>As a result of large gatherings being restricted due to COVID-19, details of a memorial service for family and staff are being carefully considered.</p><p>The impact that Thokozani has had on our lives will always be remembered. We pay tribute to him for his bravery and service and hope that as the season progresses, we will be spared any further loss of life.</p><p><br><strong>End</strong><br></p>

City launches updated Heritage booklet

The City’s Environmental Management Department has updated its Heritage booklet to provide the public with detailed information about the heritage resources

<p>Heritage is our legacy from the past which we remember, celebrate, nurture and preserve to pass on to future generations. It defines our cultural identity, it is unique, valuable, non-renewable, has lasting value and provides evidence of the origins of South African society.<br><br>‘Cape Town has a rich heritage that is connected to who we are, and as the local government, we are committed to ensuring that our diverse cultural heritage is protected and enhanced. What we do now impacts on the future of these resources. Once a heritage resource has been lost to demolition, or has been irreversibly damaged or altered, it can never be reinstated. Thus, we are doing all we can to retain our heritage resources as far as possible,’ said the City Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Marian Nieuwoudt.<br><br><strong>We do so by:</strong></p><ul><li><div style="text-align:left;">recognising the rich cultural history of Cape Town;</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">recognising all cultures and traditions represented in Cape Town; and </div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">taking into account cultural values, sites and landscapes of historical significance, as well as areas of scenic beauty and places of spiritual importance, during planning and decision making in development application processes.</div></li></ul><p>The process of heritage resource management consists of legal requirements and regulations to ensure that our cultural heritage resources are managed and protected for the benefit of future generations, as enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996. <br><br>These processes are often confusing and frustrating to the public, and for that reason the heritage brochure has been updated. Since the first brochures appeared in 2005, our zoning scheme and municipal by-laws have undergone considerable changes. <br><br>The new booklet will serve as an extension to the existing Development Management Information (DMI) Series. It addresses the heritage related aspects of the various applications that are processed by the Development Management Department. It also explains why heritage resources should be protected and how these protections are managed.<br><br>Often, people think that ‘heritage’ refers only to historical buildings, monuments or statues. In reality, heritage resources comprises so much more. They celebrate our different roots, and form an integral part of our identity. Heritage includes cultural, as well as natural heritage resources inherited and valued by society. These can be any place, space or object that has cultural significance or special value to present communities, and should be protected for the benefit of future generations. <br><br>‘Visiting heritage sites with your children will teach them about their legacy, and in Cape Town, there is an abundance of cultural and natural resources to explore and enjoy,’ said Alderman Nieuwoudt. <br><br>These include the historic settlement in Bo-Kaap, Langa Pass office and the Natural World Heritage site, Table Mountain, to name but a few.<br><br>‘Education and tourism form a major part of heritage resource management because, as an inclusive city, we want to ensure that we respect the diverse heritage of different communities and events. The Executive Mayor encouraged people to live responsibly to protect their health and that of others. South Africa has one of the highest rates of infection in the world with 7,7 million people living with HIV. </p><p>‘Knowing your HIV status is one of the most important and caring things you can do for yourself and those close to you. Having that information about your sexual health enables one to make informed and responsible choices about your life. I encourage you to get tested and know your status,’ said Executive Mayor Dan Plato. </p><p>The symptoms of HIV become more serious and occur more often as the immune system worsens – especially if no treatment is received. This may lead to Stage 4 illness and the diagnosis of AIDS.<br>Depending on the stage of illness, possible symptoms include:</p><ul><li><div style="text-align:left;">Short flu-like illness</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Swollen glands</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Candida (oral or vaginal thrush)</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Skin rashes</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Weight loss</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Diarrhoea</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Opportunistic infections – like Tuberculosis and Pneumonia</div></li></ul><p><br>End</p>
