We manage over 16 nature reserves, which make up much of the natural space in Cape Town. In addition, the branch also undertakes conservation planning, environmental education, skills development and invasive alien species management, with job creation being an important component of our work.</p><p><strong>Coastal Management Branch</strong><br>We assume accountability and management of the City’s coastline (seaward of the defined Coastal Edge) so as to ensure ongoing economic growth and opportunities, increased access and social value, coastal risk reduction and the management and conservation of the natural coastal environment and systems.</p><p><strong>Environmental Management Systems Branch</strong><br>We assist the municipality to comply with environmental laws, policies and procedures. Our work includes conducting environmental compliance inspections and audits of City facilities. We also undertake civil and criminal environmental law enforcement and provide environmental spatial data for biodiversity, wetlands and the coast.</p><p><strong>Areas Environment Branch</strong><br>We are responsible for environmental and heritage monitoring, procedures and projects. This includes enforcing compliance with environmental, heritage and outdoor advertising legislation and policies. We work with communities to maintain and enhance our shared environmental and cultural heritage through a range of projects and programmes.</p><p><strong>Environmental Planning and Sustainability Branch</strong><br>We help the City to embrace and implement a clear and up-to-date environmental strategy and policy, and to embed sustainability principles in all sectors throughout the City. Our work includes the implementation of the City’s climate change policy, resource conservation and efficiency management, sustainable livelihoods, environmental reporting, the planning and coordination of climate change adaptation, and the coordination of a natural open space system for Cape Town.
