Future of Fleet Symposium and Exhibition
On 13 October 2026, the City of Cape Town's Fleet Management Department, together with the Western Cape Government, hosted the Future of Fleet: Road to 2030 and Beyond Symposium and Exhibition at DHL Stadium.
The event brought together government, industry, academia, technology providers and mobility specialists to explore how fleet operations must evolve to meet the demands of a rapidly changing mobility landscape. Discussions focused on the transition to new energy vehicles, data driven decision making, infrastructure readiness, workforce transformation and sustainable fleet management.
The symposium featured thought leaders, practitioners, researchers and solution providers who shared knowledge, showcased emerging technologies and explored practical pathways towards cleaner, smarter, more resilient and future-ready fleet operations.
Key insights
The symposium highlighted that the transition to future-ready fleets extends well beyond simply replacing vehicles.
Participants identified several priorities for the road to 2030:
- Fleet electrification requires a systems approach, including charging infrastructure, depot readiness, energy planning and workforce capability.
- Reliable data and technology will play a critical role in improving operational efficiency, decision-making and service delivery.
- Procurement, financing and policy frameworks must evolve to support long-term fleet transformation and innovation.
- Skills development and organisational readiness are essential to ensure people, processes and technology evolve together.
- Partnerships across government, industry, academia and energy providers will be critical to overcoming barriers and accelerating implementation.
The discussions reinforced that successful fleet transformation depends on balancing sustainability goals with operational reliability, affordability and service delivery requirements.
From strategy to action
A key outcome highlighted during the day was the City’s continued commitment to sustainable mobility and fleet modernisation.
The City confirmed the introduction of 38 battery-electric MyCiTi buses for the Metro South-East Expansion, with delivery expected by March 2027. The expansion is expected to benefit approximately 1.4 million residents across 30 communities and represents a significant milestone in Cape Town's broader mobility transition.
The symposium also supported the ongoing development and implementation of the City's:
- Fleet Management Framework 2025-2030
- New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Adoption Plan
- Broader initiatives aimed at creating a more customer-centric, data-driven and sustainable municipal fleet
With approximately 10 000 fleet assets supporting service delivery across the metro, these initiatives will help guide how the City introduces new technologies, improves efficiency, manages costs and reduces environmental impact.
Innovation in practice
The accompanying exhibition showcased emerging technologies and solutions that are shaping the future of mobility, including:
- Electric and new energy vehicles
- Charging infrastructure and energy management solutions
- Fleet monitoring and telematics systems
- Data and analytics platforms
- Research and innovation initiatives
- Skills development and training programmes
Delegates engaged directly with technology providers, researchers and fleet operators, creating opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing and had the opportunity to test drive the latest electric vehicles available on the market.
