City advises of change to revenue office operating hours over the festive season ​The City’s revenue office, housing offices, traffic centres and municipal courts will be closing on certain days over the upcoming annual festive season holidays.<p>​The City’s revenue offices (which facilitate all cash receiving, account enquiries and motor vehicle registrations), housing offices, traffic centres and municipal courts will be closing on certain days over the upcoming annual festive season holidays.</p><p>Residents are advised that between Friday 15 December 2017 and Monday 1 January 2018, the following arrangements will be in place:</p><ul><li><div style="text-align:left;">On Friday 15 December 2017, the traffic centres and municipal courts will be closed from 13:00</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">On Saturday 16 December 2017, revenue offices, housing offices, traffic centres and municipal courts will be closed</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">On Friday 22 December 2017, revenue offices, housing offices and municipal courts will be closed from 13:00</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">From 23 – 26 December 2017, revenue offices, housing offices, traffic centres and municipal courts will be closed</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">On Friday 29 December 2017, revenue offices, housing offices and municipal courts will be closed from 13:00</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">From 30 December 2017 – 1 January 2018, revenue offices, housing offices, traffic centres and municipal courts will be closed</div></li></ul><p>‘We know that each year many residents rush to settle accounts and renew their motor vehicle licences in December before they go on holiday, therefore we ask that they please take note of these office closure dates and times to avoid any disappointment, but more importantly to try and beat the rush this week. With that being said, we are very happy to be able to offer extended trading hours at our Liberty Promenade cash office this festive season. In this way, we are offering an alternative to customers if they have an urgent need over these holidays.</p><p>‘Once again, I would like to thank all of those customers who are making a positive contribution to our city by continually settling their accounts and to those who have made a great effort to renew their motor vehicle licences ahead of the busy December period that our offices experience each year,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Finance, Councillor Johan van der Merwe.</p><p>The Liberty Promenade Mall cash office, account enquiries and motor vehicle registration office is situated at Shop 215, Liberty Promenade Mall, corner of AZ Berman Drive and Morgenster Road, Mitchells Plain. First Neighbourhood Safety Team hits the streetsThe City of Cape Town’s first Neighbourhood Safety Team (NST) has been deployed in Delft today, 11 December 2017<span>​<figure class="figure-credits left"><img class="responsive" alt="placeholder" src="http://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/INLINE_SAFETY.jpg" style="width:509px;" /><figcaption> <p>© City of Cape Town</p> </figcaption> </figure><p>The City of Cape Town’s first Neighbourhood Safety Team (NST) has been deployed in Delft today, 11 December 2017. </p><p>The City has identified the 10 policing precincts with the highest crime rates to roll out the NST initiative and it is envisioned that between 90 and 120 personnel will be deployed in each precinct over this term of office. The aim is to expand the existing enforcement interventions while also enhancing the City’s social investments through social development projects. Delft is the first of these 10 police precincts where this initiative will be deployed and will serve as the proof of concept test case before the initiative is expanded.</p><p>Over the years, the City has explored various interventions to address crime in the most vulnerable communities. These include the Stabilisation Unit, School Resource Officers, Neighbourhood Safety Officers, Gang and Drug Task Team and a violence interruption intervention. </p><span><figure class="figure-credits right"><img class="responsive" alt="placeholder" src="http://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/INLINE_%20SAFETY1.jpg" style="width:509px;" /><figcaption> <p>© City of Cape Town</p> </figcaption> </figure><p>The NST initiative combines all of these into an integrated intervention that will be sustained for at least three years. This is in line with the City’s goal of creating safe communities as part of the Organisational Development and Transformation Plan. It will be supported by various social development programmes such as the Women for Change and Strengthening Families programmes; an integrated task team in each police sector called a Focus Table; as well as social workers being deployed by the Western Cape Department of Social Development.</p><p>‘The fight against crime doesn’t rest with enforcement alone. In fact, many crimes are but by-products of deeper social issues that cannot and should not be solved through enforcement only. We have pulled in other crucial services and programmes to be part of this initiative and it will be interesting to see the impact that this has on crime levels. Furthermore, the NST will be a constant presence in the area of deployment, which means that the team members will over time develop a good understanding of the dynamics in the area that will in turn aid and inform their approach,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith.</p><p>The NSTs will be deployed on a shift basis in Delft, with special focus areas including public transport interchanges, shopping areas and hotspots within the area identified through crime pattern analyses. They will be supported by specialised units from the Metro Police, Traffic and Law Enforcement Departments.</p><p>‘While this is a City initiative, we are working very closely with a range of partners including the South African Police Service, Western Cape Government and the local community policing forum who have all pledged their support. Dido Valley land claimants one step closer to coming homeEvery effort is being made to ensure that the Dido Valley housing development remains on schedule as far as possible.<p>​The civil works for the 600 houses in the City’s Dido Valley housing development in Simon’s Town have been completed. This means that if all goes according to plan with the approval of beneficiaries and tender processes, the construction of the top structures will commence in April 2018. </p><p>Beneficiaries of this project will include residents of Redhill, 100 Luyolo land claimants, and those longest on the housing database from the Simon’s Town area.</p><figure class="figure-credits right"><img class="responsive" alt="placeholder" src="http://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre%20Assets/Dido%20Valley%20update%201.jpg" style="width:576px;" /></figure><p> ‘The Luyolo and Redhill communities were torn apart as a result of the forced removals in 1967 and were moved to Ocean View and Gugulethu. It is therefore heart-warming to stand on site and know that this meaningful project is on track. </p><p>'We will continue to make every effort to ensure that this project remains on schedule as far as possible so that we can bring our residents back home, where they belong,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Area South, Councillor Eddie Andrews, who recently did a site inspection.</p><p>The construction phase for the top structures is expected to take 24 months.</p><p>‘The R135 million that we are spending includes all civil engineering services, bulk earthworks, top structures and electrical reticulation. The beneficiary approvals are currently under way and once 80% finalised, the tender processes for the construction of the top structures can commence as well as the electricity reticulation,’ said Councillor Andrews.</p><p><span>​<figure class="figure-credits left"><img class="responsive" alt="placeholder" src="http://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre%20Assets/Dido%20Valley%20update%202.jpg" style="width:576px;" /></figure></span> Last year the City’s Organisational Development and Transformation Plan (ODTP) was adopted by Council to improve how the administration works, which will enhance service delivery to our residents. One of the key goals of the ODTP is reversing the legacy of Apartheid spatial planning.</p><p>‘This project is an example of our ODTP words in action. As a local government, we want to assure our beneficiaries, particularly our land claimants, that we are committed to reconciliation and redressing the inequalities of the past.</p><p>'We are looking forward to celebrating the next milestone for this project with our beneficiaries, which will be the start of the construction phase next year,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport and Urban Development, Councillor Brett Herron.</p><p><br><strong>End</strong></p>2017-12-07T22:00:00Z1
City urges residents and visitors to use public transport during festive season The City plans to prevent and alleviate gridlock conditions along routes to popular destinations over the festive season.<p>The City’s Transport and Urban Development Authority, in conjunction with the City’s Traffic Service, will over the next five weeks intervene to prevent and alleviate gridlock conditions along the Atlantic Seaboard and the False Bay coastline between Strandfontein and Muizenberg.</p><p>‘We have been implementing this strategy for the past four years and intend to do so once again. The interventions will happen on an ad hoc basis – thus, as and when needed. More importantly, the interventions may affect those travelling in private vehicles in particular. I therefore urge residents and visitors to make use of public transport as far as possible,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport and Urban Development, Councillor Brett Herron.</p><p>The MyCiTi service has a number of routes to and from popular spots across Cape Town – in particular to and from Sea Point, Bantry Bay, Clifton, Camps Bay and Hout Bay. </p><span><blockquote cite="#"> <p> <em>​​​​​​</em><em>‘Traffic congestion has become a regular occurrence along the Atlantic Seaboard during the holiday period. The best solution remains to avoid travelling to this area in private vehicles, and to rather opt for public transport, walking, and cycling as far as possible. The MyCiTi service offers a hassle-free option for those who do not want to be stuck in gridlock traffic while searching for limited on-street parking</em>.'<b>Brett Herron</b><cite>City of Cape Town's Mayoral Committee Member: Transport and Urban Development</cite></p></blockquote></span><p>Visitors can park their private vehicles in the city central business district or foreshore area and use the MyCiTi bus service or any other public transport service to reach the beaches along the Atlantic Seaboard, in particular on 26 December 2017 and 1 January 2018, which are popular beach days in perfect weather conditions.</p><p><strong>Atlantic Seaboard</strong><br>Those who have visited the Atlantic Seaboard during the festive season in prior years will know that parking is limited and that it can easily take two to three hours to travel between Sea Point and Camps Bay by car.</p><p>Interventions will take place on an ad hoc basis at the main entry points to the Atlantic Seaboard as and when gridlock conditions necessitate it.</p><p>In Sea Point and Bantry Bay, interventions may take place at the following intersections: <br>• Queens and Beach Roads<br>• Queens and Victoria Roads<br>• Queens and Regent Roads</p><p>In Camps Bay, interventions may take place at the following intersections:<br>• Houghton Road and Camps Bay Drive<br>• Victoria and Houghton Roads</p><p>‘MyCiTi buses, coaches, minibus-taxis and tour operators will have preferential access to the Atlantic Seaboard during the interventions. Those travelling in private vehicles may be stopped at these intersections and redirected back to where they were coming from until the traffic congestion has been alleviated to an acceptable level. Thus, private vehicles could be directed away from their desired destination for as long as it takes for the gridlock situation to subside,’ said Councillor Herron.</p><p><strong>Far south</strong><br>The roadworks along Main Road, one of the Southern Peninsula’s most scenic access routes, were completed last month. Residents and visitors to the suburbs of Muizenberg, St James, and Kalk Bay can now fully enjoy the benefits of Main Road, but should expect heavy traffic during the festive season.</p><p>Road users should also expect delays along Kommetjie Road (M65), and Ou Kaapse Weg (M6) between Noordhoek Road and Kommetjie Road, due to the major upgrades taking place along these sections. </p><p>The roadworks will be suspended as from 16 December 2017 until 7 January 2018, but the traffic flow will be affected along Kommetjie Road in particular as the road is very narrow along certain sections, with restricted walkways for pedestrians.</p><p><strong>Table Mountain</strong><br>Visitors to Table Mountain are also strongly advised to make use of the MyCiTi service as Kloof Nek Road becomes congested during the festive season. There is also limited parking available in the vicinity of the cableway station.</p><p>‘The MyCiTi shuttle service to the Upper Table Mountain stop is free of charge, meaning visitors need only pay on Route 107 (Camps Bay) from the central business district to the top of Kloof Nek Road, where they can disembark at the Kloof Nek Stop situated at the Kloof Nek Road/Tafelberg Road intersection. From there, commuters should transfer to the Route 110 bus – the free Table Mountain shuttle service – to the Upper Tafelberg stop and disembark at the cableway station,’ said Councillor Herron.</p><p>The same applies to passengers who are departing from the cableway station: they embark at the Upper Tafelberg stop and will transfer to MyCiTi Route 107 at the Kloof Nek Stop at the Kloof Nek Road/Tafelberg Road intersection. </p><p>The free shuttle on Route 110 runs every 10 to 15 minutes.</p><p>Commuters are reminded that they need a myconnect card to travel on the MyCiTi bus service. A myconnect card can be purchased for R35 from selected station kiosks and participating retailers across the city.</p><p>The City will also extend the operating hours of the MyCiTi bus service on routes to the V&A Waterfront and Canal Walk, and the beaches on selected days during the festive season.</p><p>Visitors and residents are advised to visit the <a href="https://myciti.org.za/en/home/" target="_blank">MyCiTi website</a> for more information about the timetable changes, or to phone the Transport Information Centre on 0800 65 64 63.</p><p><br><strong>End</strong></p>2017-12-06T22:00:00Z1
