Rental sales programme
Some of our rental properties are currently available to be purchased and transferred to qualifying legal tenants through our Human Settlements Directorate’s rental sales programme.
Own your rental home
We have identified 5 025 saleable Council-owned rental units across the metro. If you are renting one of the properties that we have identified for sale, you could qualify to purchase the property and become the legal owner.
The saleable properties are located across the city in areas such as Gugulethu, Valhalla Park, Mitchells Plain, Heideveld and Nyanga, among others.
The following types of rental properties are for sale:
- Free-standing houses
- Semi-detached houses
- Terraced houses or row houses
- Maisonettes
How to apply
Go to your nearest
Housing office.
You will need to take along the following documents when you visit the office:
Supporting documents
- A payslip not older than three months
- An affidavit (if you are unemployed)
- Proof of self-employment, and six months’ certified income and expenditure Statements
- If you receive a social grant, a confirmation letter from South African Social Security Agency (SASSA)
- Your Identity Document (ID)
- Your spouses ID (if applicable)
- Marriage Certificate/DivorceCertificate/Death Certificate (if applicable)

Please note
Multi-storey blocks of flats are currently not available for sale. The sale of blocks of flats can only happen through the implementation of a sectional title dispensation as set out in the
Sectional Title Scheme Act (8 of 2011).
