Mayor Dan Plato congratulates new SA heavyweight champion

The Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato, met with new SA heavyweight boxing champion, Cape Town-based Tian Fick. He follows in the footsteps of Gerrie Coetzee and Corrie Sanders, who also won the national title. The achievement is even more impressive, given that a Capetonian last held the national title 106 years ago.

‘I would like to congratulate Mr Fick on this achievement. Hearing his story, I came to understand that this was a deeply significant moment, as he fulfilled a promise made to his late father of becoming the best heavyweight boxer in the country. It proves that if you work hard and never give up, you can accomplish the goals you want to achieve. It also sets an example to others who can view this as motivation, especially for the youth. I have often said that sport is a way to a better life and it teaches life skills such as discipline and the value of hard work,’ said Mayor Plato.

Mr Fick was born in 1984 and became a professional boxer three-and-a-half years ago. There were numerous challenges and obstacles leading up to this moment, including injury, lockdown and postponements, among others. The City commends his commitment and perseverance to fulfil this dream, which at times seemed out of reach.

The City of Cape Town wishes Mr Fick well in his future endeavours and may you continue to hold the SA flag high.
