You can report a crime to the City using any of the below contact numbers.
Reporting an emergency
If you find yourself in a crisis situation, contact our toll-free number 021 480 7700. You may also phone
112 (toll-free).
Take note of the steps below to ensure that when making a call, you provide the most detailed and effective information:
- Once you have dialled the number and are through to the operator, give them your contact number first so they can call you back if you lose connection.
- Always give your full name.
- Describe your location as accurately as you can. Remember, the operator might not necessarily know your neighbourhood like you do.
- Give details of your emergency. Let the operator guide the conversation — they have been trained to ask the most pertinent questions.
- For as long as you are able, stay on the line. When the call connects, operators will be able to identify helpful information from the call staying connected.
The operator will then direct your call, along with the information they collected, to the relevant police, fire or ambulance service.
Top tip
Putting your emergency numbers on your fridge, or somewhere they can be easily accessed, is an effective way to ensure that you are prepared should a crisis happen.
Contact Metropolitan Police Services
The Metropolitan Police Services is a local government peace-keeping body whose primary function is to provide critical support to the South African Police Services (SAPS). To contact Metropolitan Police Services directly and report a crime, you can call 021 480 7700.
Contact Law Enforcement
Law Enforcement is a secondary arm of peacekeeping forces that operate within the municipality. Their primary function is to enforce by-laws throughout the city. They also have a dedicated copper theft unit.
To report cable theft, call their 24-hour hotline on

Contact Traffic Services
Traffic Services focus on monitoring the roads, managing traffic violations and ensuring the safety of drivers and pedestrians on the City’s roads.
To report incidents to Traffic Services, you can contact
