Since its inception in 2013, our Volunteer Law Enforcement Auxiliary Service (LEAS) has been instrumental in successfully recruiting many members to assist the City's Law Enforcement Department with by-law enforcement and operations.

Volunteer Law Enforcement opportunities are available for community members who feel passionate about creating a safer living and working environment in their community.
Applications will open annually and a limited number of candidates will be recruited into the Law Enforcement Auxiliary Service.
Please note
The City’s Law Enforcement Auxiliary Officer Programme is a volunteer programme and carries no financial reward or remuneration. Auxiliary law enforcement officers will also have no right to employment nor expectation of employment.

Volunteer opportunities
Uniform Auxiliary Law Enforcement Officer
Our dedicated team of volunteers play a vital role in supporting law enforcement efforts.
As a Uniform Auxiliary Law Enforcement Officer, you will assist in:
- patrolling;
- enforcing municipal by-laws;
- directing traffic; and
- providing crucial aid during emergencies and events.
Non-Uniform Auxiliary Support Officer
If you are passionate about supporting Law Enforcement but prefer administrative and support roles, consider becoming a Non-Uniform Auxiliary Support Officer.
Your responsibilities may include:
- IT support;
- administrative tasks;
- community engagement; and
- supporting crime prevention partnership programs.

Register on the City's Volunteer Portal to apply for volunteer opportunities.
Applications closed on Sunday, 7 June 2026. Late applications will not be accepted.
All volunteers must meet the following criteria to apply:
- 18 years old
- Commitment to a minimum of 16 hours of volunteer duty per month
- Completion of three-months of basic training
- Compliance with other relevant policy and assessments
- Good health and able bodied
- No criminal record or pending cases
- Senior certificate or acceptable equivalent
- South African citizenship or permanent residency
- Valid driver’s licence
Exceptions and exclusions
You cannot participate in a volunteer programme if you are:
- currently serving in other law enforcement capacities
- a public representative
- employed by private security companies or the private security industry
