Give Dignity to change lives
About the Give Dignity initiative

The City of Cape Town is running an initiative to raise awareness around the plight of people living on the street. The initiative emphasises the importance of giving those in need a hand up rather than a handout. Instead of a cash handout, which often increases the risk of prolongued homelessness, we encourage you to make a donation.

We support many shelters with help that really helps, enabling people who live on the street to find better lives.

These are some of the shelters that the City of Cape Town supports:

The Haven – 11 Shelters

Safe Spaces – 3 shelters

Bonne Esperance Refugee Project

Moira Henderson House

Elim Night Shelter

Loaves and Fishes

Owl Shelter

Somerset West Night Shelter

Read the full database of shelters we support.

Your donation can help someone meet their basic needs, including:

Breakfast or a hot meal

A night in a warm bed

A mask or hand sanitiser

In the right hands, your donation goes further.

Why should you donate?

By donating, you are giving dignity to people who would like to get off the street and find assistance at the shelters supported and endorsed by the City. By donating, you ensure that the goods you donate are used wisely and for the benefit of people who need it. You will also be helping to create better communities in which people are happier, more independent and more secure.

What do shelters do to help people get off the street?

Shelters focus on reintegrating people into society, and helping them to get off the streets sustainably. At most shelters, clients can get a warm bed and a meal, and have access to ablution facilities. They can store their belongings and get access to healthcare.

Social workers assist with personal development programmes, reuniting families, and referrals for substance abuse or mental health issues. Clients also receive help with ID documents, SASSA grants, skills training, and finding employment.

How are the shelters run?

Shelters are generally run by expert NGOs and are registered with the Western Cape Government.

How are shelters funded?

Shelters generally rely on a combination of public donations, limited government subsidies, and the added support of City grant-in-aid funding. In some cases a small access fee is charged to shelter clients. Sometimes clients offer to help around the shelter if they cannot pay the fee.

How does the City support shelters?

We provide financial support to 20 shelters in the City of Cape Town. The City is helping to add over 550 beds this winter through a combination of expanded City-run Safe Spaces and over R13,5 million in grant-in-aid funding support to NGO-run shelters.

Every year the City runs a Winter Readiness Programme from May to September, in which it supports organisations that provide shelter by supplementing their available resources to enable them to assist more indigent people. The City has also helped to expand shelter buildings operating on municipal-owned land.

Find out more about how you can get involved and make a difference.

Contact us

For more information on how you can assist street people, call us on 021 480 7700 (from a cellphone) or 107 (from a landline).

GP0|#7f9a2fb4-c457-498b-9316-a6c5dee11d6c;L0|#07f9a2fb4-c457-498b-9316-a6c5dee11d6c|Donate;GTSet|#a7cfb90d-44ad-4426-98ce-565f79932396;GPP|#7ecc61e7-9305-4d43-8bf7-f7c4dc6a5334Donate to help people living on the street meet their basic needs.0
