Summer-ready: City inspects streetlight work on major routes as year-round work continues

Teams are actively working in various areas across the metro as part of our year-round public lighting programme.

The City’s investments in the upgrade and maintenance of public lighting infrastructure extend beyond December. It forms part of a continuous programme by the Energy Directorate to enhance safety and visibility throughout the metro. Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg, joined officials at numerous sites across the city this week, where ongoing streetlight work, including high mast maintenance work took place. <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"><img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/DSC_7183.jpg" alt="" /></figure>‘Our teams are actively working in various areas across the metro as part of our year-round public lighting programme. The City maintains a network of more than 245 000 streetlights, and through significant investment — including a R75,5 million streetlight capital budget for the 2025/26 financial year — the Energy Directorate continues to deliver extensive maintenance, with teams attending to around 8 000 streetlight-related service requests every month. ‘We are pleased with the hard work of our teams, which has driven an impressive recovery in our streetlight burn rate, which now sits at 88,8% and is on track to exceed our 90% target. We also extend our appreciation to other stakeholders like the Western Cape Provincial Government, who are actively rolling out their own streetlight repair programme on provincial roads. ‘While teams remain on the ground to attend to infrastructure maintenance and repairs, vandalism and theft of critical infrastructure remain a challenge. Our most recent electricity infrastructure vandalism and theft figures indicate that 805 theft and vandalism incidents were reported during the third quarter of 2025 across all areas, with an estimated repair cost of approximately R16 million. The City’s Area North reported 380 incidents, Area South reported 260 incidents, and Area East reported 165 incidents. The City has deployed security to monitor hotspot areas where possible, replacing copper with lower street value alternatives and we are piloting innovative infrastructure protection tech solutions. The City can’t go at it alone. Second round of Water and Sanitation grant funding now open

The first round of grants demonstrated the power of active citizenry.

This latest call follows the success of the first round of grants implemented earlier this year. It saw community partners help drive practical improvements on the ground and work closely with residents and City teams to improve the quality of rivers, raise awareness about illegal dumping into the sewer system and strengthen relationships between the City and communities. Building on this momentum, the new round of funding aims to deepen partnerships that help protect waterways, improve neighbourhood conditions and support the City’s Water Sensitive City 2040 vision. <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/Second%20round%20of%20Water%20and%20Sanitation%20grant%20funding%20now%20open%201.jpg" alt="" style="width:938px;" /> </figure>‘The first round of grants demonstrated the power of active citizenry. We are excited to expand this work and encourage more organisations to step forward with solutions rooted in local knowledge,’ said Councillor Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation. Focus for 2025/26 The City is seeking practical, short-term interventions that can be implemented between February and June 2026. Projects should focus on: • Preventing water pollution in priority catchments • Addressing everyday behaviours and conditions that impact sewer networks, including blockages, vandalism and misuse • Strengthening active citizenry through community-led education, awareness and behaviour-change initiatives Organisations are also encouraged to include school-based water education sessions, community waterway clean-ups and co-design workshops with residents and City staff. ‘We’ve seen how local organisations bring energy, insight and trust into this work. This next round of grants will enable more community-level initiatives that not only address immediate challenges, but build long-term capability within communities. Jakes Gerwel Drive open to traffic over festive season

The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate wants to inform road users that Jakes Gerwel Drive will be open to traffic during the festive season

The rehabilitation of Jakes Gerwel Drive, one of Cape Town’s most important north-south arterial routes that links the N1 and the N2, started in January this year. The section between Voortrekker Road (R102) and Viking Way in Epping in particular, carries significant volumes of traffic with many heavy vehicles travelling to and from the harbour, airport, and industrial areas. This massive investment in the rehabilitation works is needed to prolong the lifespan of Jakes Gerwel Drive. Arrangements for the festive season: <ul><li>The contractor will pause work during the builders’ break from 12 December 2025 and will resume work on 6 January 2026. </li><li>All of the lanes will be open to traffic during the builders’ break </li><li>The contractor will ensure that the lanes, including those that are being rehabilitated, are safe for use </li><li>If all goes as planned, the rehabilitation of Jakes Gerwel Drive will be complete by the end of April 2026 </li></ul> Progress update:<ul><li>The rehabilitation of the northbound slow lane between Viking Way and Voortrekker Road has been completed </li><li>The rehabilitation of the southbound fast lane between Voortrekker Road and Viking Way has been completed </li><li>The northbound link between Viking Way and Voortrekker Road has been completed </li><li>The southbound link between Voortrekker Road and Viking Way is still under construction </li></ul> Context of the rehabilitation work<ul><li>The rehabilitation of Jakes Gerwel Drive is taking longer than other road rehabilitation projects given the road’s age and existing structure </li><li>Heavy vehicle traffic and traffic volume caused extensive damage over time </li><li>The lower layers of the existing road are removed; and replaced with granular material that is strengthened with cement to create a durable, long-lasting foundation </li><li>The cement layers take at least seven days to dry and harden, and only once this process has been concluded, the additional layers can be applied </li></ul>‘I want to thank each and every commuter and road user who have travelled along this section of Jakes Gerwel Drive over the past 12 months for their patience. As much as we have tried to limit the impact, we are well aware of the inconvenience, congestion, and frustration the work has caused. However, this project is essential to prolong the lifespan of the arterial route, and the investment will ensure we all can keep on using this road for decades to come. The contractor will resume work on 6 January, and if all goes as planned, the project will be concluded by April 2026,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
