Waste StrategyWaste Strategy<img alt="" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/PublishingImages/CCT-Waste-Strategy-Banner.png" style="BORDER:0px solid;" /><div class="ExternalClass7F910DBB59464F0FBC48BC3D93266045"><p> <strong>Building a Cleaner, Greener, and More Sustainable Cape Town.</strong></p><p>The City of Cape Town is proud to share its new Waste Strategy, a forward-looking roadmap to deliver a clean city for all, where residents and businesses have access to quality, sustainable and affordable waste services. </p></div><span> <h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​​​Why a Waste Strategy?</h2></span> <p>The world is facing growing waste challenges as population increases and urban areas expand. Pervasive illegal dumping, historical reliance on landfilling, and ambitious targets around diverting waste from landfill set by National Government have highlighted the urgent need for a more future-fit approach in Cape Town.</p><h4>To achieve this, the strategy provides a clear direction to:</h4><ul><li>Enhance data management and collection </li><li> Integrate technological advancements </li><li> Intensively drive behaviour change </li><li> Close service gaps </li><li> Partner and co-operate with civil society and private waste managers </li><li> Strengthen regulatory oversight </li><li>Ensure operational and financial sustainability </li></ul><p>By setting long-term goals and aligning the efforts of various departments, communities, businesses, and other partners, the strategy ensures everyone is working together toward meeting the targets imposed by National Government. </p> <span> <div class="infographic bg-font-adjust-bg">​​​​​​​​​​ <figure> <img class="responsive" alt="placeholder" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Inline%20Images/Waste_Strategy-Thumbnail.png" /></figure> <figcaption> <p> <span class="infoGraphicSpan"> <strong>WASTE STRATEGY</strong></span><br>​​<br>Download the full Waste Strategy.</p> <a title="title" class="btn dark-blue" href="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/documentcentre/Documents/City%20strategies%2c%20plans%20and%20frameworks/CCT_Waste_Strategy.pdf" target="_blank"> <i class="icon download"></i>Download PDF</a> </figcaption> </div></span> <h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​​​Pillars of the strategy</h2><p>The <a href="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/documentcentre/Documents/City%20strategies%2c%20plans%20and%20frameworks/CCT_Waste_Strategy.pdf" target="_blank">Waste Strategy</a> focuses on three strategic pillars: optimising existing services, minimising waste to landfill, and maximising the basket of service offerings. </p> <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Inline%20Images/Waste_Strategy_Pillars.png" alt="" /></figure> <h4>Optimising Existing Services:</h4><ul><li>Enhancing efficiencies within current services, while ensuring financial and operational sustainability; and </li><li> Improving human resource capacity, data and technology use, and internal coordination. </li></ul><h4>Minimising Waste to Landfill:</h4><ul><li>Creating an enabling environment for private sector integration; </li><li> Implementing targeted education and awareness campaigns; and </li><li> Increasing accessibility of waste minimisation services and developing additional drop-off sites. </li></ul><h4>Maximising Basket of Service Offering:</h4><ul><li>Expanding services through localisation and partnerships with private sector actors and NGOs; and </li><li> Developing tailored service standards</li></ul><h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​​​Working together for a better Cape Town</h2><p>Everyone has a role to play in reducing and managing waste effectively, and protecting our shared environment.
