City calls for cool heads on New Year's weekend<p>The City of Cape Town would like to urge the public to work with authorities this coming New Year’s weekend. </p><p>This is the third consecutive long weekend for the festive season period, which means that beaches and public spaces will be busy. There are also the New Year’s Eve celebrations as well as several events including the minstrels road march (nagtroepe)tonight and the Tweede Nuwe Jaar event on 2 January 2017.</p><p>‘We are expecting another busy weekend as early indications are that the weather will be good, which means more people will head outdoors. Also, New Year’s Day is traditionally one of Cape Town’s busiest beach days. It is also the last weekend off for many people before they return to work and this year there is the additional public holiday on 2 January, which means an extra opportunity for people to get out and about,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.</p><p>The City appeals to members of the public to please adhere to the following safety guidelines:</p><ul><li>Be aware of your surroundings at all times</li><li>Do not drink and drive</li><li>Do not bring alcohol to beaches or other public spaces</li><li>Only swim in designated areas</li><li>On New Year’s Eve, discharge fireworks in designated areas only</li></ul><p>For New Year’s Eve, the City will make the same designated fireworks sites available to the public that were used for Guy Fawkes, i.e.:</p><ul><li>Tourism Centre, Athens Road, Table View beachfront </li><li>Wesfleur sports field, Reygersdal Drive, Atlantis</li><li>Bishop Lavis sports field, Lavis Drive, Bishop Lavis</li><li>Metropolitan sports grounds, Melkhout Street, Bonteheuwel</li><li>Delft Central sports grounds, Main Road, Delft</li><li>Swartklip sports complex, Swartklip Road, Mitchells Plain</li><li>Athlone Stadium parking area (eastern side), Klipfontein Road, Athlone</li><li>Maiden’s Cove, second parking area, Victoria Road, Camps Bay</li><li>Strandfontein Pavilion, Strandfontein</li><li>Sarepta sports complex, Sarepta</li><li>Blue Downs sports field, Blue Downs</li><li>Macassar Beach parking area, Macassar Road, Macassar</li></ul><p>All designated fireworks areas will be patrolled by City Law Enforcement and Metro Police officers as well as a fire inspector.
