‘The City wants to remind residents that we will never ask for money or personal details via WhatsApp, SMS and social media, not for water, electricity or housing. Always pause and verify by phoning the City’s Call Centre. ‘Residents and potential housing beneficiaries must be extra cautious ahead of and during the festive season as scammers often tend to approach them with bogus housing opportunities via social media and other channels. Any message making claims to assist residents with an opportunity or to register them on the Housing Needs Register for a fee is fraudulent and must be reported. All legitimate communication about City housing opportunities will come directly from City officials, through our formal and verifiable channels and, if in doubt, always phone the City’s Call Centre. Manzi drops in like it’s hot in Tafelsig

The City’s Water and Sanitation staff and Manzi, their mascot, visited Paramount High School in Tafelsig.

The visit formed part of the City’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the New Water Programme (NWP), which focuses on diversifying Cape Town’s water supply. Through edutainment led by Manzi, the City’s beloved water mascot, Grade 8 to 11 learners learned about the aims of the NWP. The programme covers water use, highlighting how water is used day to day; the natural and urban water cycle; water balance, addressing the supply and demand of water; threats and water scarcity due to infrastructure, climate change or population growth. It also delves into the four legs of the NWP, which aim to increase the City’s water supply by 300 million litres per day by 2030. ‘When young people understand the value of water and how to use it wisely, they become powerful voices for change. Their actions today will shape Cape Town’s water future. The team also encouraged learners to use water responsibly and adopt positive water-saving habits. ‘The Western Cape drought that occurred ten years ago taught us the true value of water and the need to use it wisely. 'Souped up' drivers get served

The drivers of the two luxury vehicles - who are friends - were both arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

At 06:42 on Saturday, 8 November, a Traffic Officer on patrols along FW De Klerk Boulevard spotted a Porsche Taycan driving up behind him at high speed. The officer tried to switch lanes, but the driver clipped his vehicle and sped off. After a high speed chase, the officer managed to force the driver to a stop in the vicinity of Century City. The 25-year-old driver's breathalyser test confirmed that he was nearly three times over the legal limit. He was arrested for driving under the influence, reckless and negligence driving, fleeing an accident scene, failing to comply with a lawful instruction and damage to council property. The Porsche was impounded in terms of the City's Traffic by-law. In a plot twist, a friend, also 25, who the fleeing suspect called after the accident, arrived on scene only to be arrested for drunk driving too. 'This incident is a near carbon copy of an incident in May, when the driver of a yellow Porsche also caused a collision along that same stretch of road. The audacity in this case was at an all-time high, and just more proof that some supercar drivers are among our most problematic categories of road users. I want to commend the officers involved for their perseverance in catching the suspect, but also being alert to his equally inebriated friend. May the criminal justice system dish up the appropriate punishment,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith. In general enforcement efforts over the past week, Traffic Officers made 34 arrests - 27 for driving under the influence, two for reckless and negligent driving and five for various other charges. They also recorded 63 403 offences, impounded 202 public transport vehicles and executed 2 258 warrants of arrest. Their Law Enforcement counterparts made 170 arrests and issued 7 422 notices for various by-law and traffic infringements.Metro Police officers arrested 87 suspects, of which 20 were for driving under the influence, and issued 2 585 notices. The Public Emergency Communication Centre logged 1 539 incidents. The top categories of assistance required were for medical incidents, by-laws, traffic and 92 incidents of fire. Emergency call-takers also dispatched assistance for 95 cases of assault, 35 incidents of domestic violence, and 46 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents.

City’s Energy teams reach new heights

The City’s Energy Directorate has taken its operations to new heights with the acquisition of a new fleet of 37 vehicles for the 2025/26 financial year.

The new vehicles will be deployed across the metro, strengthening our capacity to respond swiftly to service requests and deliver on our routine maintenance activities.
