Learning through experiences: The EEG was created as a space for children and adults to reconnect with nature in a fun, inspirational and creative way. Nature is the world’s most effective classroom. Unlike conventional extra lessons and teaching, the learning experiences you will have in this outdoor space are available every day for free.

Download the postcard.

A history of people living with nature: Together with the EEG, we decided to build an educational space. The
design and construction of the Dome Education Centre drew inspiration from Khoi huts – a form of dwelling typically covered with overlapping reed mats and suitable for all seasons. In the hot summer months, the huts were cool because of the constant circulation of fresh air. In the cold wet winters, the huts were waterproof as the reeds expanded when wet. Apart from other benefits, this form of dwelling was very easy to dismantle and transport. The reed mats were simply rolled up and the light frame of bent branches were broken up, which suited the Khoi pastoralists’ nomadic way of life. The Dome’s design inspiration commemorates and showcases the Khoi as a First Nation, providing an opportunity to reflect on their story, lifestyle and heritage. The Khoi used the Green Point common and surrounding areas as seasonal pastures for their herds of livestock. The structure of the Dome is extremely unique as it has never been built in South Africa before, adding a pioneering element to the EEG and larger Green Point Park.

The ethos of this garden: During development and construction of the EEG and Dome, the focus was on designing according to sustainable principles. Local materials were sourced for low maintenance elements. For example, sandbags were used to build seating and elements from invasive plant species were used to construct the nests, crawling tunnel and display panels. Community artists created the wooden animal sculptures and climbing tree. The stones and boulders were unearthed on site and re-used as features in the landscaping, which can be used as stepping-stones.

Things to find and do at the EEG and Dome:

Play in the water feature and splash pad.

Play a game of hopscotch.

See sustainable construction.

Climb the spider’s web climbing structure or the dedicated climbing tree.

Engage your sense of touch, sight, taste, sound and smell in the sensory garden.

Seek and find the carved wooden animals hiding throughout the EEG – some are even photovoltaic and can teach you about how animals and humans harness sunshine.

Explore the exterior and interior features of the Dome, as well as an exhibition detailing its design and construction.
