Tourism signage
Cape Town's economy benefits enormously from the tourism industry, but it is important to balance a healthy economy with a healthy environment.
Outdoor advertising and signage is controlled to ensure that we maintain this balance.
What is tourism signage?
Tourism signs are identified by white symbols and lettering, which are printed on a brown background. A tourism sign is erected from the nearest numbered route (major road), with successive signs that lead up to the facility. In urban areas, where there are a lot of facilities, it may not be possible to display individual attractions by name, in which case, generic signs are used.
Tourism signage regulation
It is important to remember that the purpose of tourism road signage (the brown boards on the side of the road) is not to promote businesses, but to direct and guide visitors to tourist facilities while on self-drive excursions around the city. These boards can only be approved by the Regional Tourism Liaison Committee and the City's Transport Authority.
We need to support the industry while considering the environment and the scenic beauty of our roads. Tourism signage, as an integral part of information distribution, is one of the significant issues that we have addressed in our
Outdoor Advertising and Signage Policy and our current
Outdoor Advertising By-law.
Tourism direction signs are controlled by national, provincial and local legislation, read the
South African Road Traffic Signs Manual (SARTSM) and the
South African Manual for Outdoor Advertising Control.
