Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises
The City has prioritised entrepreneurship and the support of Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs) to help grow Cape Town's economy.
The Business Hub
We’ve created a one-stop shop approach where entrepreneurs can receive business and finance advice; complete building, planning and permitting applications; and pay necessary fees. Through our
Business Hub, we promote entrepreneurship and assist business owners to find support organisations that can assist in growing their business.
We help to reduce barriers faced by small business owners by reducing the procedures, time and costs associated with starting a business. Our
Economic Growth Strategy sets out how we help grow the economy and create jobs, as well as our responses to the challenges facing businesses in Cape Town.
Examples of how we achieve this include:
- introducing a one-stop shop approach to assist small businesses;
- improving business clusters; and
- refining City policies and processes.

Improving business clusters
We have formed strategic partnerships and work to improve relationships with clusters of businesses that have interconnected value chains and are located close to each other.
Our
Economic Development Industrial Survey compiled in February 2016, helps new and existing businesses to make informed decisions on investment and expansion options. We collected data from the 23 industrial areas identified in the Economic Areas Management Programme (ECAMP) and the data takes into consideration a number of business aspects including area-specific economic analyses, lists of vacant land, business cluster analysis and more.
Refining City policies and processes
Plans and processes overseen by the City include many that could have a direct bearing on our economy’s competitiveness, including planning and building approval, registration, and permitting procedures. We are constantly refining our programmes and policies to simplify procedures and accelerate decision-making processes.
