World Tourism Day: Cape Town Executive Mayor Alderman Dan Plato calls on public to vote for tourism accolades and help boost sector
27 September 2019
Tourism is the backbone of the local economy and we must do all we can to ensure its stability and growth. Our beautiful city has great potential because of its location, exchange rate and exciting attractions. We have the right mix to leverage the growth of this sector.

September was Tourism Month and saw many exciting activities - from engaging with learners in terms of having them consider tourism as a career choice to connecting with tour operators around expanding the city’s offering.
‘I am pleased to announce the City of Cape Town’s Draft Tourism Development Framework (TDF) public participation process has drawn to a close and the policy was approved by the Mayoral Committees and is expected to be adopted at full council at the end of October.

‘The process started early this year, where we saw that a huge opportunity existed for us to tap in to Cape Town’s cultural and heritage diversity and adopt a new immersive approach to cultural tourism,’ said Mayco member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management, James Vos.
The implementation of this strategy will boost cultural experiences and help diversify tourism products which will in turn lead to more community involvement and economic benefits.
The City's objective is to facilitate sustainable job creation to help establish 'tourism-preneurs' while transforming the tourism landscape in Cape Town into a thriving tourism business ecosystem.

Cape Town is currently the holder of the “World’s Leading Festival & Event Destination”. At the recent Africa & Indian Ocean World Travel Awards in June this year, Cape Town was again voted “Africa’s Leading Festival and Event Destination” for the second consecutive time. Table Mountain won the title of "Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction and Cape Town International Airport won “Africa’s Leading Airport”. All three contenders are now in the running for the world title at the 2019 World Travel Awards.
Cape Town values the role of the tourism industry as a critical sector for job creation and we encourage everyone to vote for Cape Town at https://www.worldtravelawards.com.
Voting closes at midnight on 20 October 2019.
