Woodstock and Salt River on the right foot

4 February 2020

As part of the Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme(MURP), the City’s Transport Directorate recently commenced with the maintenance and repair of the footways in the Salt River and Woodstock areas.

The contractor is currently repairing a defined portion in Chapel and Francis Streets in Woodstock, while the maintenance team is still investigating other footways requiring maintenance around the residential, business, and public areas.

‘All-in-all, the project aims to improve approximately 2 kilometres of footways. The ones we have prioritised for repair are in a dire state and our aim is to address this and to make sure the infrastructure is safe to use, particularly for our city’s most vulnerable,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Alderman Felicity Purchase.

The deteriorated surface will be removed and replaced with a new surface.

‘For our contractor to progress quickly with this programme, we ask that residents, motorists and businesses in the identified areas comply with the traffic arrangements during the construction period to ensure that it runs smoothly. These include flag personnel that will regulate traffic in one direction at a time. Where work protrudes into the road, temporary work areas will be demarcated and vehicles may be parked in the driveways as normal, if and when access is available.’

The City’s maintenance and repair programme uses bitumen to ensure that the road is resilient to weather conditions. However, bitumen is very difficult to remove from a vehicle’s bodywork.

‘I therefore ask motorists to exercise caution when moving in and around the construction area. I understand that the construction will come with some inconvenience, but I want to urge residents, motorists and businesses to work with us. All of us will benefit greatly by having pleasant footways that will offer pedestrians a safer, comfortable, and pleasant experience,’ said Alderman Purchase.
