Weekly statistics decline, but interpersonal violence calls and DWIs remain a concern
9 January 2023
In the past week, Cape Town Traffic Officers arrested 57 motorists for driving under the influence, and three more for reckless and negligent driving‘When one looks at the weekly statistics, a few things stand out, namely the drunk driving arrests which are still quite high, but also the number of domestic violence and assault incidents reported to the PECC. The City responds to these incidents where resources allow, but it is very disheartening to see how many people refuse to lay charges when officers arrive on scene. In the past week, Metro Police officers responded to at least six domestic violence and abuse complaints and in half of those cases, the complainants didn’t want to lay charges. And, while we understand that the dynamics are often complex, there is very little that can be done to assist otherwise,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
