Water and Sanitation team investigating possible sewer pipe leak in Sunningdale

The City has been investigating this matter since 20 December 2021 when reports of a possible sinkhole were first logged. It was initially suspected to be a collapsed sewer rising main, however an inspection ruled out that option. Since then there have been non-stop efforts to investigate other possibilities to determine the cause of the leak.
The area has been cordoned off since investigation began in December to make it safe for traffic until the cause has been detected and repair can be completed.
Traffic is currently being diverted in the direction of Cape Town after the robot intersection of the R27/Sandown Roads. Construction activity is in the fast lane after the intersection.
‘The City regrets the inconvenience caused during this time to residents and businesses. Given the complex nature of this matter, it is taking time to investigate. The team is exhausting all options and will continue to do so until the issue has been identified and fixed,’ said Councillor Zahid Badroodien, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation.
