Ward 78 neighbourhood watches receive donation of crime prevention equipment

30 May 2016

On Thursday, 27 May 2016 the crime fighters in ward 78 received much needed resources which will aid them in the quest to ensure a safer community.

Cllr Eddie Andrews of Subcouncil 12 set aside an amount of R30 000 to purchase resources for the Ward 78 safety sector. The Beacon Valley, Portlands, Westridge and Westgate neighbourhood structures were beneficiaries of jackets, bicycles, torches, and whistles which were handed over at a ceremony held at the subcouncil offices.

Safer communities through cooperation

Mrs Bonita Wood from Merino Block encouraged the neighbourhood watches to continue the work they do to ensure a safer community. Mr Riedewaan Nero from Westgate Block urged structures to work together and learn from each other as a collective effort would be much more effective at fighting crime that individual efforts. He further stated that the safety sector wants to work with the other sectors to ensure improved communication.

In his keynote address, Cllr Eddie Andrews highlighted the fact that the City is working towards making all areas in Cape Town a safer city. This cannot be done alone and depends on the support of volunteer crime fighters. He also said that any councillor worth their salt should allocate funds to the neighbourhood crime fighters as they tirelessly and unselfishly give of their time to patrol our streets. Cllr Andrews concluded by appealing to all structures to work together, set aside differences and focus all resources towards ensuring a safer community.
