Vuyiseka Multi-purpose facility in Phillipi East being revamped
12 July 2019
First developed in 1987, the Vuyiseka Multi-purpose facility is situated in the heart of Phillipi East. It was established as a badminton facility as part of the City of Cape Town’s bid for the Olympic Games at the time.
The facility was previously occupied by a school that made use of the classrooms while the City’s Recreation and Parks Department managed the two sports halls and outdoor sports facilities. The Provincial Department of Education subsequently vacated the facility in 2017.
‘The City’s aim is to take up office space within the facility in order to provide direct access to services to the surrounding community. These include services such as Law Enforcement, Revenue, Subcouncil services, Urban Management, Health and Housing, as well as Informal Settlement Management. This forms part of the City’s commitment to building a caring City and rationalising services to create somewhat of a one-stop-shop for residents,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.
The revamp of this facility includes the rehabilitation of the ablutions, the replacement of the roof, wall cladding, waterproofing and water connection, all at a cost of R7,3 million, which was undertaken during the previous financial year.
In the current financial year, work will include the installation of security access and stone-guards, electrical reticulation and lighting, additional ablutions, dry-walling to turn previous classrooms into offices, internal and external painting, upgrading of the parking area, external sports facilities and landscaping. A budget of about R20 million has been set aside for this work.
‘Currently, residents and businesses in Phillipi need to travel to surrounding areas such as Nyanga, Gugulethu, Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha in order to gain access to City services. Service delivery is about improving and adding value to people’s lives. It is a means through which the City is able to avail itself within close proximity to the needs of our residents,’ added Alderman Twigg.
