Upgrade of Gugulethu Meat Market progressing well
9 July 2019
First developed in 1997, the Meat Market is situated in the heart of Gugulethu and has been operational for the past 22 years. The facility is a popular destination for many local residents and those from surrounding communities as a social meeting space during the week, over weekends and on public holidays.
‘This facility is steeped in history and if it could speak will have many community stories to tell. After numerous engagement sessions with the community and traders, the City embarked on the upgrading of the facility. The first phase of this project includes the complete replacement of the braai and cooking facilities, which is central to the activities of the broader meat market facility,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.
Of the 20 traders currently trading at the facility, 10 are meat traders. These traders make use of the braai and cooking facilities for the successful running of their businesses and provide cooked meat and local cuisine to the community at large.
‘This is a well-used community facility, therefore, after many years of continuous use, it was in need of this upgrade and also to regenerate the area. It provides a sense of place for residents to meet and socialise.
‘The upgrade of the Gugulethu Meat Market is funded by the City’s Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme (MURP). Future upgrades will include the replacement of the roof, ablution facilities and the provision of improved grease traps. The entire upgrade project will cost in the region of R15 million,’ added Alderman Twigg.
