Update on water quality results for Muizenberg beach

28 May 2021

The City can confirm that the enterococci results for all five single samples are within the National Guidelines for recreational activities.

The City can confirm that the enterococci results for all five single samples are within the National Guidelines for recreational activities.

The global and national standard for coastal water quality monitoring uses enterococci as the indicator as it remains in the coastal system for longer periods, and is more reflective of human based pollution.

Still, the City advises beach-goers and surfers that water quality may still be impacted at Muizenberg beach, in particular at the Zandvlei stormwater outlet as the vlei mouth remains open to the sea.

Warning signage at the Zandvlei outlet will remain in place until further notice.

The City has taken samples at Muizenberg again this morning and should have the results in 48 hours. We will keep on monitoring the water quality as per the National Guidelines and will keep the public informed.

The Zandvlei waterbody remains closed to the public until water quality tests confirm it is safe to use again. The closure applies to all aquatic sections of the Zandvlei Nature Reserve.

The closure does not prohibit access to the terrestrial sections of Zandvlei Nature Reserve and other visitor facilities in the area.
