A number of traffic calming measures have been installed along York Road in Wynberg East. The road infrastructure upgrades come after calls from residents to regulate the reckless driving behaviour of commuter minibus-taxis along this busy route.
A raised intersection has been constructed at Sussex and York roads and a speed hump has been installed along Sussex Road between Sandhurst and Lower Piers Road. An additional three speed humps have also been constructed along York Road.
“These measures should see a significant improvement in road safety for all users, including families making use of Sussex Road Park,” said Cllr MJ Oliver of Subcouncil 18. The councillor has been liaising with the roads department on behalf of concerned residents. He reports that the community is now very pleased with the results.
“This request for traffic calming came at the right time as work on the Sussex Road intersection had just begun,” said Thulani Makibi, a roads official from the South district office. Funding allocation for the infrastructure improvements had previously delayed the project.
