Today is World Wetlands Day, a time for adventure through nature

2 February 2022

This is an amazing opportunity for friends and families to take time out to connect with each other and nature

‘This is an amazing opportunity for friends and families to take time out to connect with each other and nature. The event is free of charge and is suitable for children older than six years. Thus, I encourage all Capetonians to take advantage of this opportunity and learn more about the wonders of nature. Participants must wear comfortable clothes, closed shoes, bring a torch or headlight, and don’t forget your mask to cover your nose and mouth. A camera to capture the moments is optional,’ said the Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

Although the event is free, booking is essential. Members of the public can book via email at: conservation1k@kenilworthracing.com or call 021 700 1843 from 07:30 to 16:00.
This 52-hectare conservation area lies in the centre of the Kenilworth Racecourse and is the largest conservation area in the heart of Cape Town's southern suburbs. It is also the best example of Cape Flats Sand Fynbos remaining in the Cape Peninsula.

World Wetlands Day is a global event which is aimed at raising global awareness about the vital role wetlands play in the lives of people and the planet.
Wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems in the world and play a crucial role in river catchments both directly and indirectly by contributing to flood attenuation, drought relief, water storage and soil protection, amongst others.

Wetlands deliver ecosystem services commonly referred to as eco-services. These include the supply of fresh water, flood attenuation, buffers, erosion control, sustained stream flow, food security, fish nurseries, groundwater recharge, as well as spiritual, tourism and recreational benefits

‘Thus, I want to appeal to our residents to help us conserve and use our wetlands sustainably by limiting our impact on our natural environment. One way to make a contribution is to not litter or dump, and to get rid of our waste responsibly, ‘said Alderman Andrews.
