Teen Zone unveiled at City’s Observatory Library

24 June 2016

The revamped teen section at the City of Cape Town’s Observatory Library, named the Teen Zone, will be unveiled on Thursday, 7 July 2016.

Event programme

The fun-filled event starts at 10:30 and will boast a jam-packed programme for teens that includes live music, a jewellery-making class, sketching workshop, career advice, games and more.

‘When public libraries help to build literacy, provide informational resources, as well as develop life skills, they can be thought of as a lifeline that encourages holistic community development.

Changing role of libraries in the community

'In the 21st century, libraries have become more than a place from which books are borrowed since the focus on how knowledge and skills are provided is always changing and evolving. The City’s libraries are keeping pace, with more interactive and engaging amenities on offer – especially for our teens. The Observatory Library is just one of many examples,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Special Projects, Alderman Belinda Walker.

Teen Zone

The walls and shelves of the Teen Zone have been painted bright colours to make the space more attractive and inviting. New furniture will give teens a comfortable space to relax, socialise and read. The room is shared with other adult fiction genres, but is mostly used for studying. The aim of Teen Zone is to attract more teenage readers to enjoy the new hangout space.

‘We are proud of the spaces inside our libraries which are havens of knowledge, socialising and recreation. We hope that the teenagers will enjoy using their new space and be equally proud,’ said Alderman Walker.

The event will also include lucky draws throughout the day.

Updates to the programme will be advertised on the Observatory Library Facebook page.

Residents can also contact the library directly on 021 447 9017.
