Taxi associations commit to mediation process, commuters assured of normal operations this week

2 November 2026

Statement by Councillor Rob Quintas, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility.

Regional leadership of Cata and Codeta, Santaco Western Cape, the City and the Western Cape Government met today, 2 November 2026 to address the conflict that flared up last week. Cata and Codeta have both committed to a week of calm while a mediation process takes place.

The fact that all role players sat down together today shows a genuine wish to see calm restored. Each side was given the chance to speak, and to listen in turn. Cata and Codeta have both committed to a week of calm while a mediation process takes place.

First, each association will meet with City and provincial officials one-on-one, with Santaco present and a facilitator leading the discussion. The aim is to hear both sides and draw up a list of priority issues.

Once that is done, all parties will return to the table to explore solutions that both can accept.

I would like to assure commuters that public transport is operational across all modes. This will continue to be monitored. Commuters can expect ranks and stations across the city to operate normally for the rest of the week.

I am pleased by the commitment shown by the industry to attend the engagement today. The way forward towards meaningful conflict resolution has been set in motion and all stakeholders have shown a willingness to follow the process.

SAPS, City and provincial safety services are continuing their high visibility and surveillance operations of various routes, ranks and stations.
